George P. Mikan


George P. Mikan, 70, passed away July 15. George was born in Barberton where he was a life resident. George had been a part of the Akron music scene for over 40 years. He is an accomplished jazz musician, music educator, private keyboard (piano) and instrumental instructor and band director. He began his music studies at an early age while attending SS. Cyril and Methodius Elementary School and Archbishop Hoban High School. George was very proud of being the band director for 30 years at St. Augustine and St. Sebastian Schools. Preceded in death by his parents, George and Goldie; He is survived by wife, Fran; children, Doug (Christine), Carol (Marty) Fletcher, Jonathan (Brenda), Joseph and Joshua; 10 grandchildren and one on the way; brother, Jim (Jill) Mikan; and goddaughter, Jessica Rigney. Calling Hours will be July 19, 5-8 p.m., at the Silva-Hostetler Funeral Home, 1199 Wooster Road W., Barberton. Private funeral service for the family July 20.
