Magics, Panthers take part in state tournament wrestling

After one day of the state wrestling tournament one wrestler for both Barberton and Norton remain.

Barberton’s Gary Wokojance (32-4 record this season before the tournament) won his only match so far in the 182-pound tournament against Grafton Midview’s Trever Begin 5-4 (43-3). He will wrestle Dublin Coffman’s Lennox Wolak (35-5) next, and if he wins he’ll guarantee at least a top-8 finish.

The other Barberton wrestler was Michael Kelley (30-7) in the 126-pound tournament. Kelley fell in his first two matches, first 14-5 to St. Edward’s Bryce Hepner (33-6) and then to Mason’s Dylan Waugh (39-7) 8-5.

Norton senior C.J. Williams (38-6) also won his first match in the 220-pound Division II tournament. He beat Bishop Hartley’s Griffin Rathburn (43-9) 3-0. On day two he fell to Gage Braun (33-3) of St. Paris Graham 21-6. He will face off with Norwalk’s Alec Maloney next.

The other Norton wrestler was senior Bret Baker (39-7), who lost his first two matches. He first fell to Chaminade Julienne’s Micah Marshall (39-6) 5-1. His day ended with a 9-4 loss to Beaver Local’s Beau Smith (37-10).

    I wrestled at 195. Not 220.
