Counselor charged with sex assault

A Barberton man has been accused of sexually assaulting two women while working as a recovery counselor at Oriana House in Akron.

Todd A. Matthews, 42, is charged with two counts of sexual battery, both third-degree felonies. A woman told a Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputy May 9 her recovery counselor drove her to a parking lot in Tallmadge, May 4 and sexually assaulting her in his vehicle.

After Matthews was taken to the Summit County Jail, detectives learned a 29-year-old woman indicated she had sex with Matthews April 9 while she was staying at residential correction center in Akron.

Additional charges are possible pending the outcome of the investigation. Anyone with information regarding additional victims is asked to contact the Summit County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau at 330-643-8637.
