Norton’s girls basketball overcame a slow start and defeated Barberton, 44-26 at at Barberton High School.
The Panthers improved to 8-2 while the Magics fell to 5-5.
Barberton led early 10-6 and last led 17-16 in the second quarter. But Norton scored the last 6 points of the first half and the first 11 of the third to take a commanding lead.
Sophomore Hailey Haywood led the Magics with 9 points. She also had three steals and one 3-pointer. Casey Quinn (6 points), Sophie Shifferly (5 points, three steals), Lanysha Prewitt (3 points, six rebounds), Aliyah Rhoden (2 points, four rebounds) and Jenna Soyars (1 point) rounded out the team’s scoring while Laney Kaisk pulled in nine rebounds).
Norton was led by Bryana Housley, who had 19 points, six steals and four assists. She made three 3-pointers and 8-of-12 free throws. Bailey Shutsa (7 points, three steals), Kelsey Hosey (8 points, seven rebounds), Nicole Lester (3 points, four boards), Logan Favor (3 points, seven steals), Kaylee Murawski (2 points, six rebounds) and Gabriella Destafano (2 points) also scored for the Panthers.
Barberton won the junior varsity game, 35-16. Soyars led Barberton with 9 points and four steals. An’taniyha Easter had 7 points, five rebounds and four steals and Brenna Walker had 6 points. Madison Tatka led Norton with 8 points and five rebounds.
Next, Barberton plays at conference rival Highland Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2:30 p.m. while Norton plays at Woodridge Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
