Barberton’s girls basketball team defeated Akron North 60-20 in the opener of the OHSAA Tournament at Barberton High School.
The team improved to 12-10 and advances to the sectional finals at Hoban High School Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. The Knights were undefeated in the regular season.
Sophie Shifferly led the Magics with 18 points. She made 5-of-5 3-pointers, dished out three assists and had two steals. Aliyah Rhoden had 10 points and seven rebounds while Lanysha Prewitt scored 9 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Hailey Haywood (6 points, four steals), An’taniyha Easter (4 points, four steals), Haley Anzaldi (3 points, two blocks), Megan Schanz (3 points), Jenna Soyars (3 points, two steals), Brenna Walker (2 points, four rebounds) and Laney Kaisk (2 points, nine rebounds) also scored for the Magics.
The Magics opened the season at home against Hoban, and the Knights won 52-19, then dominated nearly every team on their schedule. But Magics’ coach Greg Whitmer won’t give up hope. “If we played them 10 times they’d probably beat us nine times, but we only need to beat them once. If we can handle their press and box out we can stay in the game. Until someone says we can’t then we’ll try to win.”
