Wooster Road W/ SR 585 Closure

Representatives from the city of Norton found a large sinkhole on Wooster Road West, east of state Route 21.

An inspection was performed on the culvert crossing Wooster Road West in close proximity to 5129 Wooster Road W. The inspection revealed a significant compromise to the integrity of the road caused by recent rainfall. Due to the lack of integrity of the road, it has been recommended by the inspector that the road is closed effective immediately.

The detour is SR 585 to SR 21 N., to I-76 E. to Wooster Road.

For questions or more information regarding this closure, please contact Robert Fowler, city of Norton administrator, 330-825-7815 or email RFowler@cityofnorton.org.

Last week on my way home from work I wanted to do some off roading in my 4 wheel drive so I drove through Norton.

Hametown Road was a good challenge but Johnson Road was off the chain. I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. 😉

The detour is incorrect on this page!! I went that way and 585 is closed before 21 so you have to get off at Hametown rd!! They need a truck friendly detour before you get to the road closed sign coming from Barberton, Richland Ave is already starting to form grooves from the trucks going down it!! Not a truck friendly road they also need to post speed limit on Richland it’s a 25 mph road and these people are mad or whatever but they fly down the road wish the police would sit here could make a killing on speeding tickets!!

I am sure that Norton will patch the sink hole, but maybe it is time to start repairing the roads and only patch in am emergency.

Patch – material used to mend or strengthen a torn or weak point.

Repair – restore to a good or sound condition after decay or damage.

Eastern Rd. is a restricted road to truck traffic because the road base was designed for residential traffic. Semi tractor trailers have been using Eastern Rd. for years as a shortcut to their destination. I have never once witnessed a truck being ticketed on this road. The road base is breaking apart due to this excess weight. It’s time the Norton police department start issuing tickets to truck traffic on Eastern Rd. There are posted signs at both ends between S.R. 21 and Cleveland-Massillon Rd. If the detour signage directs truck traffic to I 76/Cleveland Massillon Rd. that’s the route they should take.

Traffic is rerouting down Taylor to Eastern to Rt. 21 with no respect for residential speed limit. RTA buses, construction vehicles, tractor trailers paired up with kids on bikes and people walking their dogs. It’s an accident waiting to happen.
NPD puts a police officer near JR Engineering to issue speeding tickets. Now that road is closed let’s move that cruiser to Taylor Rd. and get this under control before tragedy strikes.
Why not route traffic down Cleve. Mass to Eastern?

Neighborhood streets are also in a bad bad shape, not just the main roads. Years of patching.

Actually, Barberton DID repave it’s far end of Wooster road from just east of the sinkhole to Cleveland Massilon road about 3 years ago. The last 1/4 mile of Wooster road to 585 is Norton’s shameful piece of crumbled, cratered crap that they have have been very poorly slapping patch multiple times a year on for at least 7 years now. You can clearly see the line where Barberton took care of it’s end of Wooster Road up to Richland Drive and then you fall off into Norton’s couple hundred feet of craters. It’s an incredibly busy stretch of Norton Street but appears to be Norton’s last priority. It destroys vehicles, and nearly jolts my clients riding in our company vans right out of there wheelchairs. I fully expect Norton will fix the new abyss just appeared and still not resurface that pathetic stretch while they are right there.

Please repave the entire road from 21 to el jalapenos. That road is terrible, I avoid it at all costs.

There were police and cones at the intersection of 585 and 57. Is the road closed this far back?

    • AG on June 25, 2019 at 6:00 pm

No, that was an accident on 585 at the top of that hill just past 57

If people are trying to get into Norton and Barberton from the Doylestown area; wouldn’t it be better to detour to Eastern Road to Cleveland Massillon and then take Cleveland Massillon Back to Wooster Rd (@ Johnsons Corners) and then head into Norton or Barberton at that point ? WHY all the way north on 21 to 76 and around Barberton and Norton ?

    • Anonymous on June 25, 2019 at 5:04 pm

      Not trucker friendly
