Winning streak ends at 26 in loss to Stow

Barberton’s 26-game regular season winning streak finally came to an end with a 34-21 loss to Stow in the home opener.

The Magics jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chase Haywood to Ryan Watkins. Haywood would throw touchdowns to Markim McKinnie and another to Watkins later in the game. The senior quarterback completed 28-of-47 passes for 308 yards and rushed eight times for 13 while Watkins caught eight passes for 99 yards.

McKinnie caught two passes for 27 yards and rushed 14 times for 123. Tim Starcher (four catches, 65 yards), Joe Johnstone (five for 46), Maliq Spragling (four for 46), Kaeleb Vega (three for 19) and Charlie Hornacek (two for 24) also caught passes from Haywood.

Defensively, Hornacek forced two key fumbles late in the game while Vega sacked Stow quarterback Owen Bainbridge. Bainbridge completed 14-of-23 passes for 176 yards and three scores, while Mykal Azar rushed 17 times for 97 yards and one touchdown.

The Magics will look to begin a new winning streak when they host Cuyahoga Falls Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. The Black Tigers enter the game at 2-0 after wins against Normandy (62-0) and Springfield (19-6). It’s the first time since 2014 that they’ve won more than one game.

Keep it classy Barbertonians. The young people both on the football field and in the band section work very hard for this town. You have the best up-and-coming coach in Northeast Ohio so be proud and enjoy the success. Your football program was one of the very worst in the area just five years ago, keep that in mind. Who would have thought that the football team would be winning more games than the basketball team?

No complaints about the Browns? Trade the quarterback, fire the coach, no defense, no blocking? These are millionaire players. Barberton’s are high school kids. Give them a break.

boy those browns sure know how to celebrate after a good play whether they’re winning or not!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Choreographed dance was terrific Baker!! 👌

Plays, can’t block and can’t cover. All the back barberton have can do what he do. But only two can block. The best one is number 8. But he’s a better corner than back. #21 runs hard but no vision. #26 great vision but no hands. But any of these guy can do what he did. And they block and know plays. And have brain. If haven’t learned from last year , relying on one back gets u nowhere. And if I’m not mistaking #26 lead team in running last week. It’s the system!!!

you all should beat the piss outta each other over a game!! just do it!!

Who’s blaming the quarterback. He threw for 308 yards. The other one only 176. Defense wins the game. Just like putting wins a golf championship. The rest of the schedule looks tough. They had better beat Kenmore. In my days that would have been a disgrace. Even that player that plays for the Falcons said he wished he would have had these coaches when he played for Barberton.

People in the stands said it was his fought. I don’t agree!!! The coach should not put kids out there that don’t block or know plays. Stop telling him who to throw to. Just give him side of field to read if not there check down. Or throw it away. Or run . Tell him he has 2-3 second. Then get rid of it. That’s what are coach taught us. We had 2-3 seconds to get open. If can’t do it , can’t play. Stop trying to force feed one player . Like y’all used to years ago. It’s was number 6 and #21 then. That’s way Hoban beat y’all. Had all that Talent and only use two all year. Had a 6″4 wr and a 5″7 dude over him , and never got. One ball. Your slot lead team with most yards that night. That was y’all mismatch . Those two. But no, just kept force feeding the wrong players. And got blown out. Relying on your defense against Hoban. Yeah right!!! But this year #5 is great, #3 and#8 awesome. Oh yeah forgot about #6. Man use all your targets. Your the best QB in conference. Don’t let coaching bring u down. Barberton was the better team . But like Stow fans said they knew they had better coaching. That’s what every body say about the head coach. They think they always have a chance because of coaching.

They lose because of coaching! U have a running back that don’t know plays and can’t block but still play because he’s fast. It hurts the team and qb.when qb have to tell running back were to go every play it’s bad. Why have speed with no brain . QB u give one target and no check down , stop telling him where to go with ball. U had a safety play 20 yards off slot but never throw that easy short pass that was given to u. Defense Blitz more, and play single hi safety. They had no speed. Your db are faster than there WR’s. Bring strong up closer to there slot. And Blitz!!!!! They have no senior leadership. Those young running back can’t lead. One just try to run people over and the other one has no brain and he’s soft. Back in my day he wouldn’t see field!! But he’s from here so!! The politics in Barberton!! At this rate y’all will go 6-4. Stop blaming the quarterback , and just start looking at coaches!!!

      Uh oh, spaghettios

    • Really?? on September 7, 2019 at 11:38 am

Ken, you do realize that this is the same coach that led this team to 26 consecutive regular season wins, 3 straight playoff appearances after not making the playoffs for 20yrs and has completely turned this program around, don’t you??

Then again, you must be a football mastermind, huh Ken Belicheck

      • Anonymous on September 8, 2019 at 10:43 am

It’s not because of the coaching. It’s the players!!. He hinders them!!!. U will see!!!. I’m not saying anything no other coach has said about him. From Coventry, Hoban, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls. This is what they say about him. Don’t know how to make necessary changes to win. I know these other coaches. And it’s people who wished they had his team . And my coaching from Pee-wee to high School is impeccable. I never hinder kids. I use all my Talent!!!.

    • Soft don't get you a 150 total yds on 16 touches ,you must not of played football ,if they give the running back more carries my probably win, play calling and interceptions and not covering slot recurved cost a us game on September 7, 2019 at 2:29 pm

Soft don’t get you 150 on 16 touches you must not played football ,soft don’t play all special teams an some db,play calling ,not cover slot and not blitzing and careless interceptions cost us game ,it’s that simple he your running back been playing with staff infection since orrville scrimmage ,with wind all over body ,because poor trainer and coaching communication ,and you call that soft ,once again you must not of played the game Mr no it all

      • Anonymous on September 8, 2019 at 10:49 am

Yes , he’s fast!! But can’t block nor know plays!! Can’t play!!! Don’t have brain can’t get on my field. Here or next level. The team think he’s soft and sorry. That’s his own players. Have some Talent, but no real skill. He got burnt twice and gave up a touchdown. He lost the game !!! But he’s from barberton so I guess he gets a pass. Don’t know pla

      • Anonymous on September 8, 2019 at 6:13 pm

U keep saying that! Any of the backs they have could’ve done that. And yes I played and coached. And I know real players. I’m not the only one saying this. his own team mates are saying this. Even your old players from pass teams. He’s fast , but that’s it!!. It was some coaching and ref’s. But it wasn’t QB. had to tell him every play were to go.plus had to read defense before snap. Back and QB has to be smartest out there. That’s not the cast hear. He can’t block. He runs straight up in between tackles. That makes him easy to bring down. And he looks like he don’t want contact. SOFT!!!! But he’s fast. I give u that , maybe should run track or play wr. Oh yeah he can’t block. I had 120 receiving 2 touchdowns 1 int. But dropped the winner touchdown and we lost. Guess what. I lost time because of it. And had to work my way back up. But I could block. And I was fast. Wasn’t just given to me. Barberton has a great system. Any one can thrive in it. Just have to have chance. Why back a kid if his own players don’t feel good about him. But that’s what barberton coaches do , that’s why the kids don’t like the coach. If don’t like or respect what coach believe in , kids want play hard for him. I love the wr. And QB. Defense and the #8, maybe #26. And #21 is a year away. But him, he need to study the play book. hit the weights learn how to block. Hit the books hard. Then maybe he could be the best back barberton ever had. He lacks to much right now. But not even next year #21 should start over him.

And another thing. He didn’t even lead team in rushing against Norton. Had the most carries but only 30 yards. Didn’t number #26 have the most with less carries. It’s the system!! Any of the backs can do it . The most complete back is #8. But you can win with #26 back there. Not if your throwing the back , pull him the heck out of game . But he does block and run hard plus have vision. And he probably know the plays from what I see. But who am I!! When have that many good backs. Should have two in back field anyway. For me it would be #8 and #26. Are they both seniors. If not they look like it. That just what I seen when y’all paid Norton. #21 would get carries. They all block and know plays. All have heart!!! Not soft at all. Can’t always run like your running from cops . Eventually you get caught. If didn’t understand can’t always run scared. Sometimes have to get physical. He just run to the out side. The better team it’s not going to happen. #26 has the vision and he’s small can’t see him to the last min. And some power. #8 has it all. # 21 is all heart no vision. But has speed. To me 34 just lack the most ,but must be the fastest. Look like hes not about that life at all.
