Barberton’s 26-game regular season winning streak finally came to an end with a 34-21 loss to Stow in the home opener.
The Magics jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chase Haywood to Ryan Watkins. Haywood would throw touchdowns to Markim McKinnie and another to Watkins later in the game. The senior quarterback completed 28-of-47 passes for 308 yards and rushed eight times for 13 while Watkins caught eight passes for 99 yards.
McKinnie caught two passes for 27 yards and rushed 14 times for 123. Tim Starcher (four catches, 65 yards), Joe Johnstone (five for 46), Maliq Spragling (four for 46), Kaeleb Vega (three for 19) and Charlie Hornacek (two for 24) also caught passes from Haywood.
Defensively, Hornacek forced two key fumbles late in the game while Vega sacked Stow quarterback Owen Bainbridge. Bainbridge completed 14-of-23 passes for 176 yards and three scores, while Mykal Azar rushed 17 times for 97 yards and one touchdown.
The Magics will look to begin a new winning streak when they host Cuyahoga Falls Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. The Black Tigers enter the game at 2-0 after wins against Normandy (62-0) and Springfield (19-6). It’s the first time since 2014 that they’ve won more than one game.
