Magics, Panthers sit outside looking in going into Week 8

Barberton and Norton will host important games as they look to make the playoffs.

The Magics host Massillon for the first time since 1957. The Tigers are 7-0 and haven’t won by less than 21 points this season. Barberton is 5-2 after a 31-7 loss to Aurora last week.

Norton is 3-4 and will host 1-6 Springfield. The Spartans have lost 41-10 and 52-0 since beating Coventry 21-18. The Panthers are coming off a big win against Ravenna, 32-27, that kept their postseason hopes alive.

Barberton enters in the ninth spot in Division II, Region 6, just 0.3429 points behind Amherst Steele. The two schools, along with Padua, Midview, North Royalton and Wooster, will likely compete for the eighth and final spot in the playoffs.

Norton is 10th in Division III, Region 10, 1.1 points behind Revere and 1.8286 points behind eighth-seeded River Valley. The Panthers will need to beat Springfield, Cloverleaf and Field to have a shot at passing the teams ahead of them.

The Magics are led by quarterback Chase Haywood, who has completed 85-of-131 passes for 1,240 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 174 yards on 29 carries with one score.

Markim McKinnie leads the team in rushing with 413 yards on 54 carries with five touchdowns. Kaeleb Vega has six rushing touchdowns to go along with 14 catches, 170 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Watkins leads the receivers with 23 catches, 334 yards and three scores.

Norton is led by senior Tyler Scott, who has rushed for 655 yards and 10 touchdowns while Larry Harper has thrown for 447 yards and three touchdowns.

The games will kickoff at 7 p.m.

Well 49-24. It was not as bad as I thought. It was 1957 since the last time Massillon came to Barberton. I was a senior in high school and the score was BAD. When George Izo left, they went downhill from there.

    On to next week.
