After starting the season 2-0, the Magics hosted Revere, arguably the Suburban League’s top team for their home opener.
Barberton didn’t back down, as they took a 9-7 lead halfway through the opening frame and held the lead until midway through the third, when Revere took a 36-34 lead. The teams then battled back-and-forth until there were two minutes left, when the Minutemen took a 60-54 lead.
An Anthony Cook shot cut the lead to 4, and after a timeout Jamair Blackmon stole an inbound pass and passed to Cook, whose layup cut the lead to 2. Revere took the ball down the court, but Sonny Fox stole the ball and passed ahead to Bradley Eagle, who tied the game with 40 seconds left.
Revere then took the lead with 26 seconds left. With under 10 seconds remaining, Cook sent a pass to Eagle in the corner, who faked a 3-pointer and passed to Fox down low. with no time left the forward made a layup against a much bigger defender to tie the game and go to overtime.
A Tony Fox free throw tied the game at 65 with 1:35 remaining in overtime, but Revere’s Hunter Drenth made a layup, and the Minutemen made 7-of-8 down the stretch to seal the win.
Cook led the Magics with 21 points and three 3-pointers, and he also had six rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block. Eagle followed with 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Sonny Fox (10 points, six rebounds, five steals), Blackmon (8 points, nine rebounds, nine assists, four steals), Ethan Elliott (4 points), Tony Fox (4), Jermaine Keys (3) and Bennett Miller (3) also scored.
The Magics return Friday, Dec. 13 with a game at Suburban League rival Copley at 7:30 p.m.
