The first public meetings on revamping ingress and egress to Interstate 76 were about five years ago and a significant development happened July 17.
The eastbound on-ramp from West State Street onto the interstate opened that night, providing the first access from that road in that direction in the highway’s history.
In the original plans, State Street was to be the sole access point in Barberton’s North End. Public feedback caused a reworking, with modified access from Wooster Road North joining the State Street access.
According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, the exit ramp from I-76 East to Wooster Road will stay closed through mid-summer 2021. The exit ramps westbound for either State or Wooster won’t be open until the summer of 2022. The project is expected to be completely finished in July 2022.
