One dead, one injured in Coventry ice crash

A 20-year-old Green man is dead and a 33-year-old Coventry man critically injured after crashing a snowmobile and ATV in Coventry Township early the morning of Feb. 21.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Summit Metro Crash Response Team investigated the crash that occurred around 2:20 a.m. near 530 Portage Lakes Drive on the West Reservoir. The crash involved the Green man operating a 2006 Yamaha YFS200 and the Coventry man a 2005 Arctic Cat, both out on the ice.

The vehicles collided and each rider sustained injuries. The 20-year-old was transported to the Akron General Medical Center/Cleveland Clinic by Coventry Fire and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The 33-year-old was transported to Akron City Hospital and was being treated for his life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were being operated outside allowable hours on the lake. Speed is suspected to be a factor and both riders were wearing a helmet. The crash remains under investigation by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Summit Metro Crash Response Team.

He was truly amazing. I went to school with him maybe had a few classes together but I will always remember his smile. He knew how to cheer people up and just male the day better. I send prayers to his family and his son.

These families are suffering enough. I hope you don’t plan on charging anyone with a crime.
