The Veterans Service Commission of Summit County is now receiving new, unwrapped toys and gift cards through its annual holiday donation drive and will host a free “Appreciation Lunch” and toy drop-off event Saturday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where participants can enjoy a free hot lunch and learn more about VSC and partner services. Attendees will be able to experience the mobile adoption unit from the Humane Society of Summit County.
During the event, veteran attendees also can obtain new dog tags and/or a veteran ID card by bringing a DD Form 214 certificate with proof of honorable discharge and a photo ID. In order to obtain dog tags and/or a veteran ID card at the event, veterans are asked to visit www.VSCSummitOH.us to fill out required paperwork online prior to arriving at the event.
Additionally, from now until Dec. 18, individuals, organizations and businesses can donate new, unwrapped toys and gift cards at the Veterans Service Commission of Summit County office, 1060 E. Waterloo Rd., Akron, OH 44306, for use in the annual donation drive.
The mission of the VSC of Summit County Toy Donation Drive is to assist veterans in Summit County who have received services through the VSC by providing gifts for their children and/or dependents at Christmas. Toys are for children between the ages of newborn and 12, gift cards are available for those children older than 12 to 18.
New for 2021, the VSC of Summit County Toy Donation Drive also will benefit any pre-qualified Summit County, honorably discharged veterans, who meet SNAP income guidelines. Toys and gift cards will be distributed for pickup for veterans who received financial assistance from the VSC during 2021 and eligible Summit County veterans with children and/or dependents. Toys distribution starts Saturday, Dec. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. plus Dec. 20 thru Dec. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday, Dec. 23 from 9 a.m. until noon.
