Elaine Backus Higgins

Elaine Backus Higgins was a devoted and selfless wife, mom, grandma (Gram-E) and friend. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Dec. 17, at age 74. A private funeral will be at Brentwood Roesch Patton Funeral Home Jan. 15, 2022. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date to receive friends with more detailed information to follow. Elaine was born Dec. 20, 1946 in Barberton, to Ernest and Helen (Juszli) Backus. Elaine grew up in the “Chicken Capital of the World”, Barberton. She graduated from Barberton High School in 1964. After high school she attended the University of Cincinnati and received an Associate’s Degree. She worked as a legal secretary at Brouse and McDowell for several years before dedicating herself as a housewife to raise her four children in 1977. Elaine married Tom in 1970 in Barberton. They were faithfully married for 50 years. Through the years, Elaine supported Tom in his career and they moved their family to Naperville, Illinois in 1986 and then Brentwood, Tennessee in 1992. Elaine enjoyed being actively involved in her Barberton High School Class of 1964 and was a very creative person in everything she did. Elaine was a phenomenal party planner, baker, chef, decorator and had an amazing attention to detail that made every event and holiday special to her family and friends. She especially loved baking and cooking during the holidays, which was her gift to spread joy to all. Her greatest love was spending precious time with her six grandchildren and being a fun Gram-E that always had games, arts, crafts, treats and special meals ready for them to enjoy. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Helen Backus as well as her brother Wayne Backus. Elaine is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Tom Higgins; her four children, Heather and (Brian) Crabtree of Nolensville, Tennessee, Matt and (Gina) Higgins of Nolensville, Tennessee, Marc Higgins of Nashville Tennessee, and Heidi and (Dustin) Greene of Alcoa, Tennessee; her grandchildren Brandon Crabtree, Nathan Crabtree, Tyler Greene, Kylie Greene, Isabelle Higgins and Austin Higgins; and her niece Rachel Backus of Atlanta, Georgia and nephews David Backus of Barberton, and Daniel Backus of Barberton.
