Stolen motorcycle crashes in very brief chase

Barberton detectives were working in a marked cruiser last wee looking for possible drug traffic and ended up with something else entirely.

The cruiser was on Wooster Road North when a motorcycle passed by that matched the description of one stolen out of Norton. The cruiser pulled out and tried to catch up as the bike turned onto Waterloo Road. The cruiser activated the lights to pull it over and the rider gunned the throttle.

“They’re calling it a pursuit but it only lasted about 15 seconds, if that,” Lt. Bob Lynn, chief of the Barberton Police Detective Bureau, said.

Lynn said the rider gunned it and tried to pass a car at a traffic light at the Akon city limit.

“The car was making a left turn and the bike slammed into the side of the car,” Lynn said. “It was over as soon as it started.”

Akron EMS took Troy Tompkins, 54, of New Franklin to a hospital with serious injuries and Akron police handled the accident report. Barberton’s charges to Tomkins include receiving stolen property, felony fleeing and driving under suspension.
