US Air Force A-10 Demo Team coming to Akron

Once again, a family-oriented air show is returning to Akron-Fulton Airport this summer. The Props and Pistons Festival, August 13-14, offers an affordable and fun experience for the entire family. You will see flying demonstrations, aircraft on display, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) activities, and even a car show.

The Props and Pistons Festival gives visitors a chance to get up-close and personal through airplane tours, warbird, biplane and helicopter rides. The dozens of displays range from WWII warbirds to current military, commercial, and specialty aircraft. At this show you can see a massive Air Force transport plane, the C-17 Globemaster, parked next to something as simple as a Piper Cub. There will also be FREE Flight Simulators, a FREE Kids’ Zone, live music, and food trucks.

Akron was selected as one of only twenty locations in North America that will host the prestigious A-10 Demonstration Team. The A-10 is the Air Force’s premier close air support aircraft, providing invaluable protection to troops on the ground. The Air Combat Command A-10C Thunderbolt II Demonstration Team, stationed out of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, brings the aircraft to air shows around the country to showcase the unique combat capabilities of the A-10 “Warthog.” They perform precision aerial maneuvers while highlighting the mission and professionalism of the men and women of the United States Air Force.

As the A-10 aerobatic demonstration comes to an end the A-10 & P-51 Mustang will join each other in the air to conduct a somber 15-minute Heritage Formation Flight. The Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was formed with the primary charitable mission of providing Heritage Flights to the public. These performances feature modern fighter and attack aircraft flying alongside World War II, Korea and Vietnam-era planes in a dramatic display of our nation’s air power history. These formations serve as a living memorial to the men and women who have served – or are currently serving – in the U.S. Air Force.

The Props and Pistons Festival is designed to be an entertaining and educational event. “What we’d really love to see come out of this festival, too, is the inspiration of the next generation of pilots, mechanics, engineers, scientists and military members,” said Mike Bowser (USAF ret.) of Inspire Aviation and the Festival Vice-Chairman, “This is a safe, yet exciting event where the public can enjoy what aviation has to offer everyone.”

FREE parking and shuttle busses are available at the marked parking lots near Derby Downs.
