This week the Norton Panther boys play Coventry Dec. 9 and Springfield Dec. 13. The Panthers overall record against Coventry is 79-54. The series started with a 30-27 loss Dec. 22, 1939, when Rajniak scored 10 and Borsos 9 for Norton. Norton’s record against Springfield is 65-46, Dec. 11, 1942, Jerry Miner and Bill Pyles both scored 10 in a 29-21 Panther win.

This week in Norton boys BasketBall:

Dec. 8- Record 11-6. 1944- Bill Wasil sets a then-scoring record with 43 points and Nick Paolono 11 in a 78-53 win over North Canton. 1972- Panthers down Coventry 64-52 as Joe Hydeg scores 19 and Mike Boyer 12.

Dec. 9- Record 10-8. 1952- Norton squeaks by arch rival Wadsworth 54-53. 1960- The Coventry Comets go down again, this time, 67-52 as Ed Greenbank scores 19 and Rich Hahn 14.

Dec. 10- Record 11-9. 1943- Harold Baughman scores 26 in 50-26 win over Springfield. 1980- Once again Coventry is the victim as Norton wins 68-35. Dave Morris with 22, Chris Baughman with 15 and Jeff Buskey with 12 paces the win.

Dec. 11- Record 8-17. 1981- Norton routs Green 65-46, behind 19 points from Randy Hanson and 18 from Steve Braman and 12 from Chris Baughman.

Dec. 12- Record 10-11. 2014- Robby Robinson scores 18 in 72-56 win over Crestwood. 2017- Panthers down Cloverleaf 61-36 behind 11 points from Taylor Warner and 10 from Santino Fox.

Dec. 13- Record 9-11. 1947- Panthers down Hudson Academy 44-29, McCray and Shrader both score 10. 1968- Ravenna falls 83-67. Greg Wood leads the attack with 38 big points. He’s aided in the win by Gary Cowling with 12, Jim Grubb with 11, and Jim Hodge with 10.

Dec. 14- Record 10-9. 2007- Norton downs Crestwood 97-49. Cody Howe scores 22, Kevin Haramis 16, Tim Plouse 13 and Justin Emerick 15 in the win.

Did You Know? Opponents of the Panthers have hit century mark nine times over the years. The most by Buchtel in 1963 they scored 109 and in 1981 Copley scored 108.

Barberton girls play at Kent Roosevelt on Dec. 10, the Lady Rough Riders are led by Lexi Canning, daughter of Lady Magic great Keri Canning. Barberton’s overall record against Kent is 47-13. The series dates back to March 9, 1977 when Darlene Lewis scored 12, Hope O’Neal 11 and Kim Luck 8 in a 45-43 win.

Dec. 14 the Lady Magics play the always tough Medina Highland. Barberton has an 8-19 record against Highland. The first meeting once again goes back to 1977 when the Lady Magics prevailed 47-39 behind Darlene Lewis with 12 points and Pam Smith with 8.

Dec. 8- Record 7-6. 1998- Devery Robinson scores 19 and Brooke Mattel 13 in 58-34 win over Firestone. 2012- Lady Magics down Akron East 46-34 behind 14 points from Harley Berlesky and 11 from Macy Chik!

Dec. 9- Record 4-4. 1982- Barberton destroys Kent Roosevelt 73-33. Leading the way Anne Marie Anderson with 22, Valerie Parks with 18 and Tammy Simmoms with 12. 1985- Kenmore falls 79-45 as Pam Paddy scores 22, Rhonda Cherok 14 and Charlene Carlucci 11.

Dec. 10- Record 7-2. 1981- Jann Koster and Anne Marie Anderson both score 15 in 61-44 win over Canton McKinley. 1996- Keri Canning sets a Lady Magic record with 36 points in 87-72 win over Buchtel.

Dec. 11- Record 2-5. 2004- Lady Magics rout Ravenna 77-32. Whitney Hamilton scores 20, Shana Andrus 16 and Brittany Mingo and Olivia Williams 10 each in the win.

Dec. 12- Record 7-5. 1998- Michelle Sutton scores 10 and Nikki Golden 12 in 49-46 win over Stow. 2012- Alliance falls 52-25 as Katie Wright scores 13, Lindsey Berlin 12 and Heather Sykes 8.

Dec. 13- Record 8-3. 1984- Lady Magics have an easy time with the Falls in 67-32 win. Sue Guilda scores 18 and Shari Wakefield 15 in the win. 2001- Candace Wilson with 20 and Dominique Askew with 13 pace a 65-25 win over Kent.

Dec. 14- Record 4-3. 1989- Barberton romps over Springfield 78-42 behind Megan Koster’s 23, Sue Logsdon’s 15, Amy Heilman’s 13 and Julie Chalmers 10. 2005- Lady Magics down Eastlake North 59-23. Jessica Greene and Whitney Hamilton score13 each and Andola Dortch 8 in the victory. 

Did You Know? The 2019-20 Lady Magics hit a record 114 3’s and a record 24 3’s in back-to-back games.
