Suspect killed in Downtown Barberton

Bob Morehead

Herald Staff Writer

Barberton Police and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation are trying to sort out a lethal shooting Downtown.

Police say that an officer shot a suspect near the 500 block of West Hopocan Avenue at 9:05 a.m. Dec. 26. Zachary D. Zoran, 34, of Akron was taken to an area hospital, where he later died of his wound.

Police received a call around 9 a.m. that a man was following a woman near the YMCA, threatening her and demanding she hand over her car keys and other things. Police arrived a short time later and found the suspect, who fled. They found him in the Lakeview United Methodist Church parking lot and say he was brandishing a knife.

“Officers gave several verbal commands to the suspect to drop the knife but he refused and then charged at officers,” Barberton Police spokesman Marty Eberhart said in a statement.

Eberhart said one officer fired once, hitting Zoran in the upper abdomen, and he fell. Even wounded on the ground, he refused to let go of the knife and resisted handcuffing.

An employee at The Coffee Pot restaurant saw the entire incident unfold outside their window.

“I saw this guy talking to this young couple,” the employee told The Herald. “They walked into the building and were telling me about it. They said they thought he was going to rob them, that was the vibe he gave them.”

The employee said she set the couple up at their table and walked toward the window to see two police officers approach the man, guns drawn. She said the man turned and started walking toward Lakeview United Methodist Church.

“Then he turned around and started walking toward them,” the employee said. “They told him several times to stop and he didn’t. Then he reached toward his pocket for something and the one officer on the right fired one shot and he went down.”

The suspect was soon surrounded by officers, followed quickly by paramedics. The church parking lot was cordoned off and part of Second Street closed as officers worked the scene.

Zoran at the time had a felony warrant out of Cuyahoga Falls for aggravated menacing after threatening a family member over Christmas. In the last 24 hours, he’d made several social media posts threatening police and the public and claiming to always carry multiple weapons at all times. Previous charges include domestic violence, carrying concealed weapons, endangering children and aggravated drug trafficking.

The two officers involved are on administrative leave pending the review from BCI, the Summit County Medical Examiner and the Barberton Detective Bureau.

Cameras on exercise building and body cams show the event from start to finish. You are spreading false information. He waved a knife at police twice. First he was warned, second he was stopped. Police did there job. His social media threats tell the whole story. If his stupidity didn’t kill him, drugs would have. BPD-1 Crakron-0

I do have video, it was just turned over to the Ohio bureau of criminal investigation. I was informed that I shouldn’t share it but it shows five officer’s standing over a man dying. It shows that they didn’t do anything to help as far as putting pressure on the wound or CPR until EMS arrived. It shows them cutting his jacket off of him just to turn him over to see an exit wound. Honestly, that was the only knife that I ever saw during that incident. It shows how CPR was then stopped so an officer could finally remove the handcuffs. It also shows that he does before the EMS arrived. And not so everything is bad, it showed a certain EMS rep trying his hardest to bring life back to that man. I praise that man because he did EVERYTHING he could to save his life. This guy should be recognized but I don’t know who he is. But he was Barberton Fire EMS. God bless that man!!!!

If he were speeding down Rt8 and thru Firestone park firing his gun at police, would there there be a protest for him?
Would they shout justice for Zachary Zoran?
Would they spend 3 months on a Soros funded dime destroying a city?

    How bout Ethan Liming?
How bout show some F’ing respect for him by taking down the criminal Walker’s signs from the very F’ing spot where Ethan was brutally and racially beaten to death at????
No no we cant do that, Ethan was white, CrAkron justifies the criminal black, while segregating the whites.

Editor: read this article. Did you ever complete high school English??? “ Police had gotten a call around 9 a.m. ”. Gotten? No wonder kids can’t write or speak when they’re exposed to this excellence.

    Hey Ann,
The whole event was captured on video. Your statements are false. Stop spreading rumors to justify a felon from Crakron. Play stupid games win stupid prizes. BPD dont play stupid games. So if any more Crakronites want to play stupid games in Btown, you will lose.

What in the world is going on in peoples heads? Every day we learn of more violence one man towards another. A year or so ago a brutal attack occurred in a Second Street business. I don’t know how the investigation will play out and it is not prudent either to condone or condemn the police action, but from what is being written so far I’d say they did what they had to do. Thugs (and the gentleman’s record shows him to be just such) must be stopped. How sad that we who are supposedly advancing in culture and knowledge are in fact moving closer to acting like brute beasts. Pray for peace!

I didn’t see any knife, not saying that he didn’t have one. Also, I didn’t see the officer’s rendering first aid, it was a good 5-7 minutes before EMS showed up and started CPR. They cuffed him and let him lay in the snow until a young officer cut the man’s jacket and rolled him over, maybe to see an exit wound. Rolled him back over until the EMS arrived. They actually stopped CPR to remove the man’s cuff’s. This is an awful tragedy. I feel so bad for the man’s family and the officer’s that were involved. It was a bad day
