QUICK POLL….After over 1 year of “President Trump”

    1) Great President
    2) Greatest President

    I vote for Number 2

  2. Jan on February 21, 2018 at 6:35 pm

I can’t believe the comments I am reading here. I’m literally shaking my head.

You people think that the answer to the horrible gun problem is MORE GUNS?! That is just insanity!

We have a gun problem. Who doesn’t have a gun problem? England and Australia. We need to look at what they are doing and incorporate BEST PRACTICES.

I absolutely love how readers on this site say, “It’s our right to have a gun!” OK…let’s deconstruct this argument. The founding father agreed it was your right to have a musket in case England invaded. You still want a musket? You got it! They never intended you to own anything more than a musket.

I love how Republicans think the second amendment and the bill of rights is somehow infallible and somehow equal, if not higher, than the bible. Republicans think anything in the bill of rights is infallible, but they forget the part saying black people are 3/5 of a person. Look it up. Is that part infallible? Or are you just cherry picking parts to fit your political agenda? What about Prohibition? That was in the constitution. Was that infallible? I hope not, cause the repeal is also in our constitution!

The common sense approach is model gun laws based on other countries that have low levels of gun violence. Anything else is dangerous, and a threat to the safety of the majority of Americans.

    • Sig Sauer on February 21, 2018 at 7:28 pm

You may have a gun problem but my family dont!! Armed and ready!!

  3. naked gun on February 21, 2018 at 12:25 pm

We defend our president, congressmen, governors, celebrities, sporting events, jewelry stores, banks, courts, factories and office buildings with GUNS.

We defend our children ……..with a sign that reads:
……and then call someone with a gun if there is an emergency!

    • ananymous on February 21, 2018 at 1:56 pm

      Well said!!

    • Sig Sauer on February 21, 2018 at 6:13 pm

I agree any gun free zone is a accident waiting to happen. It makes you wonder who the ignorant people were that made them gun free zones!!

    • Jan on February 21, 2018 at 6:55 pm

I got a better idea…hear me out…what about it….wait for it….we OUTLAW ASSAULT WEAPONS. You know, since our founding fathers had no idea what these things were. Let’s outlaw guns other than the musket. The musket is what our founding fathers wanted you to have. Not assault weapons. Not nuclear weapons. Not tanks. MUSKETS.

      • Sig Sauer on February 21, 2018 at 7:31 pm

As uncle ted nugent would say we don’t have a gun problem we have a people problem!!

  4. ban assault weapons on February 21, 2018 at 11:41 am

If you think banning assault weapons will stop the killing you’re crazy.

    • Jan on February 21, 2018 at 6:35 pm

Actually you’re wrong. Banning Assault weapons will greatly reduce the number of people killed by guns. It’s common sense.

      • Sig Sauer on February 21, 2018 at 7:33 pm

Your not very smart are you!! I would never let anyone disarm me!!

Kimble has yet to pick up one dirty diaper or a wee wee stained mattress, however the comedy has already begun!
Watching these guys unload the new cans with the wheels falling off and lids that won’t close. Hey Mayor’s office, you might want to get rubbish cans with lids that close so the trash does not blow all over town. Seriously, every other can has a lid that won’t close with a 5 inch gap. We may be the opiate capital of NE Ohio but by golly we know how to clown up the city services!

In the Feb. 8 edition of the Herald, Michelle DeShon was so worried about the seniors and the budget cuts to Meals on Wheels that she is blaming on Trump but yet after, I hope, doing more research, she publishes an article in the Feb. 15 edition stating how services won’t be cut. Why not get your facts straight before you publish inaccurate information. I haven’t liked this reporter since she started. Get rid of her.

Trump has divided us into “cliques” . Blacks against whites; Democrats against Republicans; Rich against poor; The Bible against science; Gun rights activist against Gun Control activist; US against everyone. Russia assisted the Trump Campaign by weaponizing Facebook, Twitter and other social media to divide and separate the different factions. Trumps nasty tweets are a daily occurrence and almost always spread lies and innuendos to his rabid troll “followers”.

The destruction of fundamental Government Agencies. The EPA, the DOJ, The State Department, The FDA, the DEA, Federal Court Judges, the Treasury Dept., the NRC, the USDA, even recently the FBI. By under staffing, hiring cronies, replacing scientists with politicians who are completely under qualified, he has successfully undermined the original missions of these agencies and how they work for the people in general.

After promising to drain the swamp, Trump Hires swamp monsters Rex Tillerson from Exxon, Steve Mnuchin from Goldman Sachs, Wilbur Ross whose wealth is estimated by Forbes at $2.9 billion, Ben Carson, Trump Butt kisser and a former neurosurgeon, Rick Perry, former governor of Texas with a degree in veterinary Science is in charge of our power grids. Betsy DeVos an AMWAY heiress with no degrees in education at all and no political experience was given Education.

Trump Vacations. Now at a cost to taxpayers of over 100 million dollars, Trump is once again in his Fla Golf Club. Remember when he said “I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.” January 16th, 2017 or “There’s just so much to be done,” Trump told CBS’ 60 Minutes

Racism’s rebirth. Trump called the KKK and American Nazi’s “Good people” during the horror of Charlottesville, Virginia “Unite the right” racist rally. With 3 Dead and 34 Injured after White-Nationalist Rally, Trump first delayed saying anything. Then he defended the racist. Then he read a scripted response and still went off rail in his remarks. NEED MORE ??????

You probably don’t care, but I do, cause I was a young American at that time, and had friends serve and come back messed up. But yah…anything for lower taxes on the rich and to “outlaw abortions” and “ban same sex marriage” cause we all know it’s the gays and people having abortions that are keeping the poor poor!!!

I got my tax bill. My property was reevaluated and the SCHOOL PORTION ONLY went up $223 and some change a year. That is about 3.8 mills increase they got with reevaluation. If the tax levy is voted in my taxes for JUST THE SCHOOL will increase $494 dollars a year. Does Norton need that much money and a income tax levy to support the school?

      • David Houpt on February 11, 2018 at 7:52 am

I was incorrect on the amount my school tax went up. The corrected amount is $243. The total amount of school tax increase will be $494….. I just got one number wrong.

so sad to see the Family Dollar at Norton close. was so convenient there at the plaza.. grocery, hardware, post office… and a nice parking lot. Dollar General does not sell many of the same items. the stand alone …Family Dollars, (or GD) make me targets for “hold-ups”… and so many stores closing these days … I worry about those folks who could not afford college … where will they find work? I also think if these Dollar Stores and Mini Marts etc, would get rid of the mini ATM’s… there would be far less, crash and grab and dash crimes, which would keep their insurance rates down and prices as well. It’s just “asking for it”…..having them in the stores. I can’t help but wonder… how much longer our Kmart will be here. I don’t like to order online, increases your chances of getting hacked, I have a lousy mailman who mis-deliverers frequently and then there’s the porch pirates. I would rather go to the store. Anyways, just sad….sign of the times.

Anybody Else getting tired of the Weather Forecasters “crying wolf” ? Where is our 6-8″ ? They get people all upset and panicky, sheesh. All we ever get is a Fizzle. not just Snowstorms, but in Summer too, Thunderstorms. I think they lost their ability to use intuition, relying on computer patterns and such. The Weathermen of Older days, I think were more accurate. They have so many bright colors on radar now, it “looked like” we were really getting clobbered with snow, but I looked outside, nothing. maybe 1′ on the ground. 3,5,8,19 and 43 only seem to understand the weather by the lake. Does anyone know of a good internet link to a more accurate weather source for Summit County? (I esp. feel sorry for school superintendents, that have to make “a call”, with such false weather predictions. then they get the flack)

    • The King of the Weather on January 13, 2018 at 10:02 am

I am with you on this. I never take what the news says because of what you said and when the days actually get here then the news had it all wrong and it is always something else, mostly better than expected. You know, they put these forecasts out and people go cancelling their plans because of it and I just go about my days as planned. 9 times out of 10 I am able to do everything I wanted to do and I did not cancel plans because the news said it was going to rain or snow.

You can get some nice apps for your phone. Storm is a good one and it is free. NOAA has one that is reliable. I have also found eWeatherHD to be a very reliable source as well and you have to pay for that. I think it is $2.99 but definitely worth it. That is one that airline pilots use a lot. Weather Underground is also a good one that I would recommend. Don’t just stick with one though, use them all and see what they all say and base your decisions off that. Also you should study the radar and satellite data as well as the surface data maps. There is a lot that goes into this if you want to stray away from the news but you can have much success with it and have reliable sources.

Also, go online. Intellicast is probably the best source of information I have found and they work in conjunction with Storm. They keep up to date and are always on their game. They got good radar, satellite, and surface data there. Weather Underground is also online and is nice to use as well. They have a nice 15-day layout that seems to always be correct. Take with a grain of salt up to 15 days because a lot can happen but I have found it normally works out to be favorable.

These sources also link up to personal weather stations in the area and there are quite a few in the area. I have one on my property and I love it! I guess you could say I am kind of a weather geek and love collecting data.

By all means STAY AWAY FROM ACCUWEATHER! AccuWeather is by far the WORST! People in my circle call that one InaccurateWeather.

      Hope this helps.

it starts out as a legit topic, bringing a citizen concerns to the table. but then some antagonist comes with insulting one liners to ruffle your feathers and of course you tend to fire back, that’s why I said this place is turning into a 5th grade playground, full of bullies and name callers. ( and we all are guilty of getting pulled down to their “level”. the Herald needs to appoint someone to more closely monitor these posts. These one bullying insults should be Deleted. Posts with name calling should be submitted back to the posted with an edit request or it will not be posted. this page needs a little Censorship, it is giving Barberton a bad look. the Town is already going through hardships, with places closing, empty housing, the homeless, and drug problems running rampant, lack of jobs and more. Barberton and I am sure many other small towns having a tough time, trying to attract new residents and businesses, so they can improve, (and yes I know they do need to do more than that, like a complete city hall audit and get rid of waste $) not going *there*… but what I am saying is, Barberton doesn’t need a Childish Forum on what is supposed to be their News Media Page. Let’s try to keep the name calling and smart remarks off of it. Stick to the topics. State with facts, do research before you post, and behave like Adults, and stop scaring away, anyone who “might” be interested in this Town. this is not a Tabloid. Thank You.

Article???? Sometimes it appears that we’re reaching a period when our senses and our minds will no longer respond to moderate stimulation. We seem to be reaching an age of the gross.Persuasion through speeches and books is too often discarded for disruptive demonstrations aimed at bludgeoning the unconvinced into action. The young, and by this I don’t mean by any stretch of the imagination all the young, but I’m talking about those who claim to speak for the young-at the zenith of physical power and sensitivity overwhelm themselves with drugs and artificial stimulants.Subtlety is lost and fine distinctions based on acute reasoning are carelessly ignored in a headlong jump to a predetermined conclusion.Life is visceral rather than intellectual and the most visceral practitioners of life are those who characterize themselves as intellectuals.Truth is to them revealed rather than logically proved and the principal infatuations of today revolve around the social sciences-those subjects which can accommodate any opinion and about which the most reckless conjecture cannot be discredited.Education is being redefined-at the demand of the uneducated-to suit the ideas of the uneducated. The student now goes to college to proclaim rather than to learn. The lessons of the past are ignored and obliterated in a contemporary antagonism known as the generation gap.A spirit of national masochism prevails encouraged by an effete core of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals.

Triska, don’t condemn a forum simply because some post uninformed replies dripping with a juvenile attitude.
This forum is not about investigative report type videos or statistical breakdowns with pretty pie charts and graphs. I feel this forum is about creating awareness in regards to both good and bad from all 4 corners of the town. Some may not agree with several of my posts, but I can assure you they are astute observations. Even the most die hard blind followers here in town have to stop and think just a wee bit which = “awareness”. Either the glass a.k.a. this forum is either half empty or half full, It’s up to the reader. I too, wish some folks on here would clean up their lame 4th grade antics via the “reply” function. If you don’t agree with an observation, give some real FACTS on why you disagree. Facts = examples, many of the rebuttals are missing facts. From ABJ this morning. Your mayor is now wanting to dig into the city financial coffers by negotiating the purchase of the Magic City pit stop aka the old McDonalds property in order to build a new justice center that will cost 14 million bucks. So we sell the old Portage school property on a prime corner for $1 & one elementary school on state street continues to sit empty. Obviously the city will apply for grants at some point but did leadership miss manage some previous property related dealings ?? When I read about this along with us taking over Norton’s sewer problems, I think the taxpayers should be gravely concerned. WE NEED TO START CRUNCHING FINANCIAL DATA 3-4 TIMES BEFORE WE ENGAGE IN OR FINALIZE THESE TYPE OF DEALINGS. How about we focus on collecting the hundreds of thousands of dollars owed to the courts via fines before we move them? FYI… YOUR CITY COUNCIL GAVE MR. JUDGE THE GREEN LIGHT ON THIS LATEST FINANCIAL POT HOLE . Just another bypassing of the local taxpayer at work via city council.

    • Anonymous on January 7, 2018 at 10:50 am

I agree, What about the old Sieberling building? It could also hold enough room for a jail that we could actually lock up people for unpaid fines instead of turning them over to collection agencies.

Seems like the truth and financial FACTS turn you blind faith followers into 4th graders when it comes to posting adult replies and or rebuttal’s. Telling us to move and using bar room language = LMAO

A few years back the 2nd largest city in summit co Cuy Falls dumped their municipal court and went to a mayor’s court. They opted to do this due to solid number crunching. Now their court system shows a profit. Stow who opted to pick up this muni court has been losing money ever since. This is something we should be looking at instead of being financially responsible for what ever portion of the 14 million is not covered by grants. Maybe we should know how much of the 14 mil is our responsibility before we go any further ??
        Hint : answer is “yes”.

Sewers and Muni courts are not money maker’s, but spending money and getting press in the papers is big publicity for the local hierarchy. We need jobs and retail development. We do not need to build a taj mahal for the sentencing of heroin addicts and traffic offenders.

we should start posting pot hole locations, so the city can start spot filling, esp. if it is in a potential accident area situation. Today I would like to report a nice pot hole at the stop sign at Auburn and 31st. cars are stopping ..straddling the center to avoid the hole, thus making cars turning onto Auburn having to make a wide turn to avoid a fender bender. please fill. Thanks! (i.e. if the city doesn’t know about it, they won’t be fixing it and the City can’t be held responsible if they are not aware of a potential car damaging pot hole = their legal defense) so if you see a nasty “pot hole,” …. lol..the problem with the “MOVE” comment, is that, houses do Not sell in Barberton, because of the closed businesses, poor roads, flooding, homeless, drugs, empty houses, slumlords and pollution. (Summit County is #1 in OHIO for opiod OD and I bet we’re right up there in the ranks) No One wants to Live here. (in about every 3rd house, lives an xcon, and you can look that up!) so if their answer is “Move”… then, they can come and Buy my House at its’ Property Tax Appraisal and I will gladly Move! Right now with all the vacant houses and foreclosures, lowering values, I’d be lucky to get half that, and that is, even IF I had an interested buyer. Obviously, that “Move” commentary individual has an unrealistic view of our economy and our neighborhoods, sitting with a beer in their hand, unemployed, bored and only knows how to spell one word… M-O-V-E.

They feed off the hard working taxpayers around here but they NEVER say THANK YOU to the hard working citizens who really pay their fat cat salaries. If I was one of these blow holes, I would be a bit more grateful to those who fund your paychecks. I also like how they repeatedly “hide” and deny they work for the union. Am I the only one who is appalled, rather than charmed, by the atrocious spelling demonstrated in the majority of children’s letters written to “Santa” for publication? Why are their parents or teachers not making this a learning experience, helping with grammar and content, showing the kids how to spell the items on their wish lists correctly? And why is the Herald supporting this exercise in illiteracy? Now we know the real reason for coal in the stockings: neither jolly Saint Nick nor his helpers can decipher what the little rugrats are requesting.

    • Literacy is Cool on December 18, 2017 at 9:59 am

Excellent post ! We have a voter base that continues to reward a state verified failing school district. The building blocks for any child k-3rd is rated an F by the state. Your graduation rate is 7 out of 10 kids. Your district does the state minimum on all scholastic levels and the older students are given 1/2 days off on Fridays. So what real job or life skills are the kids learning around here ? In real life mediocrity and doing the minimum does not feed the bulldog. This district needs to add welfare, ssd and food stamp applications to the curriculum. They are doing nothing to help break the cycle of living off the state & fed government.

  38. The King of the Weather on December 16, 2017 at 8:35 am

I’m scrolling around through comments here and I would have to agree with those folks who are saying that the city is doing an unacceptable job on the roads. They seem to be very poor at both Fall and Winter cleanups around town every single year. There is nothing wrong at all with demanding better work out of your city services when you are a taxpayer in town. Those of you on here who are making negative comments towards people like I am seeing here are most likely city workers defending their terrible work, or maybe people who are already retired, unemployed, or don’t work at all for some reason and they spend all day online making comments and not getting out of the house to know what is really happening. I’ve lived here many years and I can tell you that it was not like this many years ago. The city services were always on top of things and took care of the streets and plowed them when they needed to be. No one had to wait 2 or 3 days for their roads to get done. It has only been in the last 10-15 years that this service has fallen apart around here and they need to step it up.

    • No win situation on December 16, 2017 at 5:36 pm

Before I comment no I don’t work for the city !! All the comments about how the city did a better job 15 yrs ago I’d like to say budgets were different then and nobody wined as much as today so if the city cleared all the streets and worked a ton of man hours the people who are bitching about snow removal will be bitching about going over budget! So it’s a no win situation.

      • Get Plowed on December 16, 2017 at 8:40 pm

You PERS supporter’s really need to put more thought into your remedial excuses and responses. Let’s say we have an avg winter, not like the last 2 cupcake years. Winter for the most part encompasses a 12 week period. A modest figure of 2 O.T. shifts needed per week on avg X 12 weeks = 24 O.T. shifts. So the city budget is paper thin and we cannot afford that expense ?

We seem to have plenty of dollars for the writing of 6 figure checks for street repairs and money to pay O.T. for city festivals and events during the warmer months. Not all taxpayers are mathematically challenged. Making excuses for sub par performance in any job field can become like a disease. Warm up is on the way so rejoice and Happy Holidays !! Many more snowed in weekends yet to come !

          • What are U Say'in ? on December 18, 2017 at 10:11 am

Lets use and or apply your philosophy of “just pay it like everyone else and move on with your life”

1] don’t shop for a better interest rate, just pay 25%
2] don’t look for the best doctor, just go to the closest one
3] my kid has a drug problem. it’s ok, so does my neighbor
4] don’t expect your local city services to be professionally done. Just give them pay raises

I certainly hope your blind spot is PERS related only. I really do. Peace

Barberton does a admirable job during the work week 8-5. Where they fail horribly is over night and weekends. This was not always the case 10 years ago, they did a nice job back in the day. So without bickering or too much debate, it comes down to one simple question. Is the city offering snow removal OT for nights and weekends or are the workers refusing the OT which is not mandatory due to union rules ? Don’t have to tell ya which way I am leaning on this one. Winter’s stink anyway, all par for the course. Happy Holidays !

My child is grown and on her own. I am very proud of her. I never took it as the school was to be the only one to teach my child. I had to have a part as a parent. during the time as my child and yours was going to school more then just us was paying taxes. Now. It’s our turn. Not satisfied with what the school teaches? be apart. you don’t have to have kids in school to reach out and help. I was in the army during all of her school time. BUT I made it appoint to know and help every chance I had. I knew the teachers the staff, I even knew the janitor. so stop blaming the schools. We did this by not being apart of the system. coming from a family of 17. My dad would burn any books we brought home. with a child of my own. I made a difference. a small one but I was involved. a proud daddy.

    • Reality Check on November 25, 2017 at 12:03 pm

Let’s apply some of Paul’s “unique” logic to other jobs and or services. Server at the restaurant brings you over cooked and cold food, so we should go to the kitchen and re-make it ourselves and leave a tip with the check ? Cable company screws up your bill, so we should drive to Wadsworth and show them their mistake and make the correction ourselves?
Auto mechanic forgets to put oil in the engine when changing the oil, so we should have checked the dipstick before we left? Since we did not, we tell him it’s ok and we will pay out of pocket for a new engine. Correcting or turning a blind eye to other’s short comings in the work place does not make you part of an army or “involved”, it makes you a gullible patsy! Are you this flexible on a daily basis with other professions & services Paul? Hypocrisy is disease!

I have no kids in school or grandkids. I could care less about football, soccer or whatever. I am on limited income, and do not think I should have to support the schools, since they changed the curriculum, our young adults are dumber than ever! They do not know how to measure, make change etc unless a google shows them how. They have any of the social skill they need to get along in society. It’s be in a “Click” just because it’s “cool”, ( even if they do wrong) Bully others, to make themselves feel superior, or go shoot or stab people, they don’t agree with instead of discussion and compromise. The world is doomed with this fantasy play, uneducated generation. Instead of looking something up, let Alexa or Siri, do it for you. I have dumped enough of my hard earned pay into the schools, and all they want is to have a fancy looking school building, but not really teach the kids. I just want to be able to buy food and pay my bills. sorry, but Not everyone is a “Soccermom!”

“I have no kids in school” – And you have all the answers.

        • It's Magic on November 18, 2017 at 8:32 pm

Do you even have a clue to why some folks have a limited income ? Let me educate you. Hospital bills, med co pays & medication, loss of a job due to biz closing, at or approaching soc security age, home repairs needed, helping a family member with bills or student loans, etc…. get the pic ? Not everyone has a perfect financial situation. Not everyone has a job making 40K + per yr. Do not judge someone simply because $25 -$50 per month is important to them. Why do those who oppose the school levies simply want more on the job accountability from the schools and those who support the schools seems to be so snotty when in reality we are all living in the same drug riddled & property value plummeting zip code ?

      • It's Magic on November 18, 2017 at 8:43 pm

I am afraid stu the pew and greg are right. If you take in account all of the rental & sect 8 parents then multiple them by their friends and family you have a large number that could show up to vote. Add in all of the gravy train riding teachers & admin working for the district along with their friends and families you have another large number. Proud homeowners who have worked hard for decades and live by modest means are clearly the minority in this town. They could pass a levy here every month. Patti Cleary once said that 70% of the district enrollment was on the free / reduced lunch program = parents paying no taxes. Landlords won’t raise rent because the slumlords don’t need the $ that badly. It will never end. I owe Chase bank 4 more years then I am gone. I will kick back and laugh when this town has a zero tax base by 2025 and the state takes over the finances.

GET OUT & VOTE TODAY ! Please be sure the read the language in regards to the two state issues. Both have been broad stroked to the voters, be very careful. VOTE NO on the school levy. Bottom line I have no issues when it comes to helping the youth here in town. I have voted in favor of multiple levies in the past. But ask yourself, has your district performed in a positive manner as viewed by the state via the 3 year performance index? That answer is NO.

A “NO” vote simply means that you are sending a message to the district that a sub par performance is not acceptable. A “NO” vote will not take away their computers or shut off the utilities. Teachers will not quit and the school admin will not resign. You are simply sending a message of “improvement is needed”. What kind of message does rewarding mediocre performance send to the kids when it comes to real life skills they will need as adults ?

I was down on “Bebe” after reading some stuff here about some alleged decision making issues from his past. Then I thought, has anyone other than Lysenko asked or inquired about how the cities “daily business” is being conducted and could things been done differently or more soundly? THE ANSWER IS NO. A few months back I learned that the owners were having trouble getting natural gas service for their new business. I immediately contacted Mayor Zita and asked him to look into their problem. He did so right away as he does with all requests from constituents. He gave the owners the good news that natural gas was indeed available and since then it has been installed. I think this business is a good addition to our city and will be there for years to come. Thanks again for the Mayor’s quick action.

Another Fall and another year where Barberton starts the leaf pickups WAY too early. Started October 24th. They need to think about bumping that up about 3 weeks. Leaves really do not start coming down in bunches until about early November.

Now if they come back to Ward 4 where they started, it may not be until mid-December and hopefully we have not had snow or else the plows will push leaf piles all down the road and back into yards. If you recall, last year was really cutting it close on time. Other years, not so fortunate.

Best idea is to mulch the leaves up with your mower and forget raking! That is what I started doing a couple years ago.

    • John Q Public on November 2, 2017 at 9:19 pm

Fact: Residents can only put the leaves out for pick up after they fall. Solution: Your service director only needs to drive thru the town very quickly to verify that the leaves have begun to fall. Employee’s are already on the payroll, just assign them to leaf duty shortly after the leaves fall. WHY STICK TO A SET SCHEDULE ? City planning around here is robotic at best. No pride in making sure a job is both planned and performed at a top level. Are we flipping burgers around here or do the taxpayers deserve better ?

“Bebe” Hetic for council has about 4 DUI’s. Elected officials should be of high character records, not drinking and driving records. Barberton is doing well these days, no need to elect law breakers.

          • Chris Ison on October 25, 2017 at 9:15 pm

Since were on the subject of high morals and high character. Soyars should have recused himself from voting for the school levy since he was employed there. Or how about not questioning giving Canfora 100k over a five year deal for a lease that should have been free. After all that is that is the same person Bill Judge called out for not paying and stiffing the city. How about not filing the proper paperwork with the board of elections, in reference to his campaign finance report. Last one filed was 2013. That’s real decision making there. No thank you.

Gentlemen, let’s stay civil here. Mr. Parker, if you’d like to hear my ideas for the city, my email is I would love to correspond with you over thoughts and concerns regarding Barberton. There are a few issues I believe need addressed and have not seen over the years. Plus new ideas that are worthy of discussion and actions. I believe people can trust in their concerns with me, and if elected I will do my damnedest to make sure their voices are heard. If not, then I would say like anyone else vote me out if ineffective. If I do not win a seat, I as a citizen will still bring these things to attention and would work hand in hand with the incumbents to advance our fine city!

It seems like you’re sooo smart, you must attend all of the committee and council meetings, NOT. In regards to the racially related “Top Story” in the Herald. How does anyone know who perpetrated his act ? They could have been white, black, purple, etc. Could be a simple ruse or prank. Until you know who or whom perpetrated this act it is merely an over publicized story about vandalism, nothing else. As a community we do not need to fuel race baiting and this story should have never got past the police report section. This town is so racially mixed on so many levels I find anything derogatory in regards to “race” around here to be laughable. The Herald should have used a little better decorum when looking to publish this information. The Pierson piece a couple of weeks ago was done in suspect taste as well, public record or not. You know what they say about big stones and glass houses. We have all had a bad moment.

  67. Mr Esquire on October 21, 2017 at 12:09 am

I am disappointed for a real reason. Our education system in the United States is mediocre at best, Less than half rate when compared to the educations of the world. Out of 65 countries who rate their education systems we rank in the middle. But we pay the most for education in the world. Go to a hospital, see the good DR jobs, most you cant say their last or first name because they are not American. When our children graduate from high school and attend college they are forced to take remedial classes because they did not get the education needed to attend a college.

We have so many people wanting to be teachers and no jobs for them, yet our school boards say we have to pay a great wage to keep the teachers. When you put out a call for teachers and you get 250 applicants per job there is no reason to pay more money. Supply and demand. To get a fresh, educated and certified teacher is not a bad thing. When talking to the lobbying group for the teachers, school board members who are ex teachers or people who have family members working in the school system they want us to think new teachers cant teach. They are certified by the state and can teach.

If you are a teacher, an ex teacher, or have family members who are teachers you are not a good school board member, you are a lobbying for the teachers union.

    • Jan on October 21, 2017 at 10:08 am

Look up World Health Organization’s Ranking of Health Care by Country in google.

The USA is ranked 37! COSTA RICA is ahead of the US!!! Our healthcare system is half rate. It is mediocre at best.
Using your logic, let’s totally stop any money that goes to healthcare since I am DISAPPOINTED that the US is ranked 37!!! There’s tons of new med school graduates, and future business leaders that could easily fix the system! Let’s defund healthcare and fire all the doctors, and those who work in healthcare because we are ranked 37, and because there are cheaper, younger, graduates we can hire to take their place. Then we can fire these new graduates that we hire in 3 years and replace them with cheaper younger graduates!

      • Mr Esquire on October 22, 2017 at 3:55 pm

Your response is spoken like a true lobbyist for the teachers union. How about if we quit electing lobbyist’s to be school board members. Vote in people who want to make our school systems better instead of giving administrators and teachers raises. Throwing money at this problem does not work. We are living truth. Hire teachers who can teach, statistics show we are doing a mediocre job at this.

If I ever hired a health care person and he or she did not do the job I would let them go and find one who will do what is expected of them. I have fired doctors who I did not feel they were doing the job, we need to do this with incompetent people in our schools also.

Teachers get number 1 pay in the world for education, how about us getting them to do a number one job? We are paying for it.

        • VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER on October 22, 2017 at 5:24 pm

FINALLY….. another person who believes that pay raises, benefits and pensions should come with on the job accountability! IN THE REAL WORLD you have to produce or you are are terminated. This levy is not about unions, taxes, homeowners, kids, etc. It is about the open checkbook mentality and the entitlement that the district has grown to expect from a struggling tax base. I voted “yes” multiple times in the past because the district was in full decay, the taxpayer wallets have more than remedied that problem. Tired of the bogus excuses : Lil Johnny has a poor home environment, state grading system is unfair, the next district over is failing, so why can’t we ?? Excuses are the tools of incompetence. It is easier to find an excuse than a solution.

VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER and send a simple message. Improve your on the job performance or no more “extra” perks. A NO VOTE will truly help the kids.

    • Jan on October 23, 2017 at 6:40 pm

Using your logic we should dictate the pay of doctors’ on how healthy their patients are. I mean if doctors’ have overweight and unhealthy patients they clearly aren’t doing a good job, right? It’s about accountability! Isn’t it? Or is it only about accountability when it comes to teachers?

Lobbyist for a teacher union? That’s laughable. I am merely pointing out a double standard in your line of thinking. By the way, where is your outrage on the police and fire unions? People love picking on teachers, because it is easy. These same people who cry about the union never talk about the police union or the fire union. They don’t care about accountability, they merely have a grudge against public education. One last point on the issue, if you care about accountability so much than why are 99% of private charter schools, that taxpayers fund, failing?

It is simple. If you want high property values, then vote yes on a renewal that will cost you $0 more in taxes. If you want to defund education, and have subpar schools and home values, than by all means vote no on the renewal.

      • mr esquire on October 24, 2017 at 7:22 pm

When I doctor fails to heal me as I expect, I fire said doctor and get another one. I am not able to fire a school teacher if said teacher failed to educate a child. The school board has the job of running the school system. They hire administrators to perform this task. Our school system is failing us and we have administrators and a few school board members who think the answer is to throw more money at the problem. That does not work, we have proven that, paying the highest in the world to educate and ranking 50%.

Raise our taxes, provide a half rate education is not the way to raise the value of your home. If you want to raise housing value, cancel open enrollment, force the people who live out side the district to purchase homes in Norton’s school district. We would need approximately 300 houses to house the 600+ children and parents. This would bring about $10 million in income into Norton. With the housing shortage and all that money, our values would increase. Your formula to raise housing value only gives teachers and administrators more money. I have not noticed housing values rising in our area.

  68. Disappointed on October 20, 2017 at 3:19 pm

As a life long resident of Barberton and a product of the great education I received from this district, I am greatly saddened that our OWN COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER doesn’t seem to support their own district!

Let’s be honest the only reason that you published the salaries of city and school employees was to stir the pot….sell more papers…NOT because of your journalistic integrity to “keep the community informed.”

Here is what you didn’t include with your wages:
    1. Typically, the amount of education you have correlates with the amount of income you make.
    2. You too could have pursued higher education opportunities which would have allowed you to make better wages.
    3. Educators have to pay for all continuing education out of their own pocket. To keep their license current they have to get 6 graduate hours every 5 years for their entire career. Unlike other careers where you are compensated for going back to school.
    4. There are great things going on in the Barberton City School District! I see it everyday with the opportunities that are afforded to my nephews and niece.

I realize that the state report card is disheartening. But if people truly took the time to educate themselves on the changes that are made every year, they would understand that the state is consistently comparing apples to oranges to grapes to etc. Instead of apples to apples to apples. When the state finally allows that to happen you will see a significant change in the state report cards.

    • Jan on October 20, 2017 at 8:38 pm

Let’s be honest, Barberton Herald only cares about one thing: The Barberton Herald. The Barberton Herald is in the business of selling more newspapers. It would be dumb of them not to publish faux juicy and faux salacious stories of those “fat cat government employees” living lifestyles of the rich and famous! Sometimes the Barberton Herald tries to be the National Enquirer, but ends up more like World Weekly News.

That said, voting yes for the school levy is a no brainer. It’s NOT a tax increase. It will cost the tax payer exactly $0. Good Schools = Good Communities.

      • Triska on October 21, 2017 at 11:55 pm

….and also a no brainer….. if you vote NO…your property Taxes will go Down! because the Tax will not renew. with cost of living going UP and paychecks going down…due to medical insurance hikes and all… folks could use a cut rate. I also felt that…Folks who have children in School should pay the School Levies anyways, if you have no school age children, or home school, then that fee is not included in your Property Tax bill. or start just making all Schools… Tuition Entry? and Pay to Play. I am sure they could find Organizations to help those who are of Low Income. it’s an Unfair system.

        • Jan on October 22, 2017 at 3:47 pm

You are correct that if you vote no your property taxes will go down, but it will go down something like $50 a year. What is more important? Keeping your property values high and having quality schools or saving $50 a year? You will lose thousands if you vote not on the levy.

Don’t quit your day job ! Anyone with an ounce of homeowner / taxpayer sense knows that the property values have sunk for most while very few have stayed the same. Our taxes have nearly doubled in 15 years, all fact! Go to your county tax record, it is all there for a remedial mathematical review. Really getting tired of you school district cronies making excuses and giving out miss information. Know anyone who owns a home in Wadsworth ? Their property values continue to rise and they have had only 1 school levy in 10 + years. Why is that ??? Better budgeting would be a strong guess. Your propaganda of schools increasing homeowner value is as mythical as finding a big foot out on Barber Raod.

I believe over 80% of the district budget goes to the employee’s. Always wondered how that 80% could coincide with the b.s. mantra ” it’s for the kids”. NO, the issue’s with the Easton Rd speeding had not been addressed. The reduced speed limit to 25 was a brief moment by means of the sign being attached to the portable speed checker which does absolutely no good what so ever! The “road closed”, really, to who and where? The construction did not slow down the traffic one bit. In fact the road closed signs were being ignored completely and the people just drove around them! Now that the road is about complete there absolutely no doubt it will be the best racetrack in Norton!

    • Norton on October 20, 2017 at 7:19 am

Most of the people complaining about speeding, the dust, and all the bumpy roads and the construction project around Easton rd are the same people who wanted city water and sewer now that it’s being installed we have a group of cry babies! Now you have to deal with it.well water and septic has worked for generations.

      • Easton 25k on October 20, 2017 at 8:53 am

You are correct WELL WATER & SEPTIC does work and is far less expensive than this project that was forced upon these residents. There is NO CITY WATER that is included in this project at the ridiculous rates that will be charged to the Nash residents, and WILL include interest on top of the $11,200 if not paid in CASH! Please do not forget the additional cost to make the changes within your home to even be able to connect. Oh, and the additional fees for the actual connection and plumbing outside to connect at the road! The speeding is definitely a problem, always has been and continues. I am sure we can get video feed from those residents on Easton with the security cameras to prove this!

Who changed to traffic pattern on Wooster Rd N. and Hopocan?? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen It goes along with the lights on Tusc Street and the Bike Trail. There will be some many wreaks you wont be able to keep up with. I am beginning to hate this town and the stupid ideas they do!!

    • Thomas "Bebe" Heitic on October 15, 2017 at 10:25 pm

Yet making Third Street off Wooster to Tusc between the post office and McDonald’s can’t seem to be one way with angled parking. If you come from downtown turning left onto Wooster is nearly impossible, to do so you have to pull up a car length past the line then no one can turn onto Third.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the way our new Middle School principal, Mr. Andric, has been dealing with bullying issues at BMS. Things have been dealt with swiftly and I am seeing consistent methods to handle any of the school issues. I have also been notified the same day when my student has been brought into the office to discuss what he/she has witnessed. I am sensing a No Tolerance policy at Barberton Middle School. Thank you to Mr. Andric and his administration at Barberton Middle School for making me, as a parent, feel comfortable that any issues regarding the students will be handled appropriately.

  76. Jack Gainer on October 8, 2017 at 11:53 pm

I am now going to comment on Dennis Pierson’s comments to the police dispatcher. Mr. Pierson has been caught in so many lies and has failed to respond to them even when a citizen wrote a letter to council that stated in no uncertain terms that Mr. Pierson “and” My opponent had lied not only to the public, but also had lied to their fellow council members. These lies were to influence the outcome of a vote by council to either buy or not buy the Chief of Police a new vehicle. If not for the citizen’s letter they might have succeeded.
I am not an attorney, however if this is not a crime, then it should be!
In regards to his racist remarks about everyone who participated in or attended the Norton Cider Fest, his remarks were so terrible as to disgrace the office that he holds. How can any person who respects the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts,The Lions Club,The Chamber of Commerce or all of the volunteers and the visitors who helped make this years Fest such a success, I ask “how” can anyone vote for this person?? I also will be interested in my opponents opinion as to his constant support of Mr. Pierson since joining council? Does he have the same opinion of all Cider Fest participants as does his close friend?
Please Vote for Jack Gainer for Ward 1 Council and rid the city of these two individuals.

    • Mr Esquire: on October 11, 2017 at 11:50 am

If I call the Norton police and my comment is not consistent with the party line of the good old boys, will my call be leaked to the press like you did Mr Piersons? Usually news media need to ask for the information, my question is how did they know about it unless it was “leaked”? Are all calls to the police department leaked to the press?
If you want a councilman who will fight for you then vote for Mr Pierson. If you want a councilman who plays “get along” and will sell you out for the “party line” then dont.

      • Honesty on October 13, 2017 at 7:48 pm

I myself found it very disturbing that this type of call made it out to local media. Public record or not, both Norton & Barberton seem to have issues with confidentiality. This is a perfect example of why some neighborhoods live in fear, to afraid to call police because everyone is aware of the “leaking” of caller info when responding to a disturbance. I myself have witnessed police divulge whom the complaining neighbor or caller was when they responded to a call.

Is any shocked at the usage of the phrase “white trash” by anyone living in the 44203 area code? We own
25 % of Summit county drug over doses followed by an economy backed by food stamps and sect 8. Mommies & Daddies who do not work. Councilman or no, guy responded in an upset manner because it was affecting the quality of his neighborhood. No one cares about a problem, providing it happens at somewhere else. Maybe Mr. Gainer would like to hold next years festival near his home ? Pierson needs to own his comments and the people who actually get out and vote will applaud him for it. How many of us have not made a derogatory remark at some point, truthfully ? Vote based upon politics, not a phone call.

  77. VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER on October 8, 2017 at 2:10 pm

The hard working homeowners around here [ few that are left ] have stood by this school district for 15 + years ! I myself voted YES for more than one tax hike. This district AS VERIFIED PER OFFICIAL STATE REPORT CARDS and statistics has been on a meteoric decline. We can no longer turn a blind eye and make excuses. I could care less about other district ratings or the fact that Lil Johnny comes from a less than desirable at home academic surrounding. ON THE JOB RESULTS = $. This is the most basic financial concept in ALL job markets.

ACCOUNTABILITY needs to put into place. LETS GET OUR DISTRICT REPORT ON THE RISE AND COME SEE US IN 2 + YEARS. WE CAN NO LONGER REWARD MEDIOCRE PERFORMANCE. They need levy dollars for pay raises, health care and always rising pension costs. State money can NOT be used for their own * EXTRA * financial luxuries. PLEASE VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER. You will be truly helping the children by sending this message = IMPROVED STATE REPORT CARDS WILL = $$. To bad the football program could not seek their own levy, coach Gotto and his players are a perfect example of hard work & positive results = praise and respect from the taxpayers. GO MAGICS FOOTBALL !!

    • Thomas J on October 10, 2017 at 7:11 pm

Thanks for your comments. That said, I think you are misinformed in several ways. First off, voting YES, is NOT A TAX INCREASE. It will cost you exactly $0 if you vote yes.

Secondly, the district is actually INCREASING in test scores. You see, every year the Ohio Department of Education increases the percent that they consider passing. This past year, I believe they said that 80% is considered passing. What this means is that if the entire 5th grade has 79% of its math scores as passing, the state will give the district an F grade for the 5th grade math score. Correct me if I’m wrong, but last I checked, a 79% in your drivers test, a high school class, or even a college course is considered passing. So why is the state now saying anything less than an 80% is failing? I believe it is because politicians, and bloated statewide bureaucrats, in the Ohio Department of Education, are making the stakes so unattainable for the majority of school districts on purpose. They need to keep their jobs so they are making the state of Ohio look like it is failing on purpose. This is purely a sham.

If you still think I am wrong look up the grade for Strongsville City Schools. Strongsville is an upper middle class district and have many Browns players living it. They scored a C!!!

My last comment to your point is in regards to accountability. If anyone was to take your post on face value, than we should dictate the pay of Doctors at Akron City and Cleveland Clinic on how well they perform in regards to their patients that they see. When you go into your doctor’s office for your yearly physical, and your doctor says, “you need to lose weight” do you listen to him/her? Given your logic, we should dictate doctors’ pay based on how healthy their patients how. If you don’t listen to your doctor and you gain weight when they tell you that you have to lose weight, we should dock doctors’ pay. Just like doctors, teachers tell their students how to learn. If students care not to take their advice, just like patients with their doctors, why should we fault the teacher? Unless I am totally misunderstanding your point, and you do feel that we should decrease the pay checks of doctor’s when their patients show up more unhealthy to their yearly physical.

You make the former school super “Patti” look like an amateur at “spin doctoring”. Your comments could not be further from the truth. Why do all of you district cronies refuse to look at things from a JOB BASED PERFORMANCE standpoint? Mediocre results do not warrant financial increase. Stop stating that this is not a new tax, that is very misleading to ill informed voter’s. Here is the truth : Almost 5 years ago we had 4 emergency mil levies thrown at us in under 2 years and it finally passed after 3 failures. So it was a new tax 5 years ago and now it requires voter approval in order for them to keep milking the taxpayers. This town has stood by this district financially and the coffer’s are dry ! What is wrong with any homeowner keeping some money in their pocket while asking for an improved district performance BEFORE the next taxpayer funded financial windfall?

LEVY DOLLARS can and will be used for pay increases [ on top step raises ], health care and always increasing pension costs. THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE KIDS OR QUALITY OF THEIR EDUCATION.
I want educators who truly care about a failing k-3 literacy score and a well below avg graduation rate.
Time to EARN the taxpayer’s money.

I find it funny that you think that I am a “spin doctor.” I am an average joe interested in truth.

          1) You are incorrect. The levy IS NOT a tax increase. It will not raise anyone’s property tax. This is a FACT. I challenge you to find facts to correct me on this. You won’t because you know I am correct.

          2) You stated this in your previous post,
          Performance Index 2015-2016 73.52
          Performance Index 2014-2015 85.05
          Performance Index 2013-2014 90.82

Man this looks bad at first glance (even though a 90, 85, and 73 are all passing grades)! What you are forgetting to mention, is that in each of these 3 years there were DIFFERENT State Tests and DIFFERENT DIFFICULTIES! 2013 was an easier test. The state then changed tests, and made it harder in 2014. The state changed again in 2015, and made the test even harder with a different testing company. These are facts. I am disappointed that you neglected to mention these facts in your posts. You are clearly spinning this issue. It seems you want the schools to fail in order to propel your ideological agenda. Shame.

          3) You talk about accountability and job based performance. Why don’t you want doctor pay dictated on accountability and job based performance? Just like teachers, doctors give out advice to their patients. If patients don’t take their doctor’s advice, then maybe we should dock the pay of doctors like you want to dock the pay of teachers. You are a hypocrite if you want to defund education, and let doctors earn a 6 figure income, when their patients are unhealthy. Tell me when it is a job based performance success of a doctor seeing a patient who refuses to listen to their medical advice.

Is throwing money at the problem the real answer to mediocre education in the US?

In our world there are slightly less than 200 countries. Out of the 200 countries 65 compare education. Out of 65 countries we are rated in the mid 30’s for quality of education. This means there are over 30 countries who educate the children better than we do in America.

Now look at the price we pay: We pay the most of any country in the world for educating our children in public schools. Pay the most and get rated 50% in quality of education. This is not very good bang for the buck.

A recent visit to a local hospital I ran into foreign doctors. The majority of the doctors I ran into were not American. Where are our students if we are doing such a good job of educating the youth of America?

Throwing money at the problem does not work. We need to see what the other 35 countries that are doing better than us are doing and adopt their way of educating our children.

I dont live in Norton, but use the Norton School System. To vote for an ex teacher, or a mother of a teacher is just putting the fox in the hen house. All Santelli and Webel did was vote for early raises and increases in operating expenses. Never did they look at educating our children for tomorrows world.

Thank you for your interest! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. My email is and I’ll do my best to answer promptly. I do guarantee a response. As for a “jabroni looking for 900/mo part time paycheck” I assure you the 10k per year salary is not a factor. I’ve personally discussed with citizens in order to make the pay attractive enough for a full time engineer (as the charter commands) instead of outsourcing it to GPD Group all elected and appointed officials should take a pay cut. It’s about working within our means. If the position on council paid 1k a year I’d still be willing.

The council meetings are at 730, but there are committee meetings beforehand where the public can interact. Council decorum prohibits retort when addressed in the meeting of the whole.

We need to STOP sub contracting out jobs that should be done by our well compensated city workers. STOP writing checks and start having our well paid employee’s go home a little tired with dirt on their clothes for a change. Do you have any idea how many MILLIONS of dollars we could have saved by having our own employee’s do lets say 50-60 % of the street repairs over the past 3 years ? What could a struggling town do with an extra couple of million bucks ?? uhmmmmm

We need rep’s who will get off their arse and GET OUT AND MEET THE PEOPLE and help organize community watch groups to combat crime / drugs. Grass roots “Bebe”, that is what this town needs. Tired of seeing rep’s do nothing and then they expect the full time working citizens to attend meetings, etc. That is why we have you rep’s, you are to be a voice for those who WORK AND PAY TAXES.

COUNCIL NEEDS TO START ASKING QUESTIONS AT THE MEETINGS. I followed meeting minutes for years and the only person who asked questions and asked about other options was Lysenko. I respect the pluck it takes for you to run but lets really hear about your agenda. ANY person running for rep should have at least a 5 point plan ready for discussion. The floor is your “Bebe”.

          • Thomas "Bebe" Heitic on October 10, 2017 at 6:14 pm

I would love to work at quite a few things. For starters making the weekly agendas available online to keep more people informed. Also I would like to try to end this practice of “suspending the rules of the charter and declaring an emergency” so things don’t go three readings and voted on right then and there. Authorization of the mayor to enter into contracts without public input is only an emergency if proper research and public input is disregarded. Understandably, liabilities can be (disposal of assets like decommissioned police cruisers), less they sit and do nothing.
Moreover, outsourcing should be used in the case of state or federal monies when they pay 51% or more. A road company answers to GPD Group, again an outsourced engineer. I want our own with our interests in mind.
Elected officials should be more hands on with citizens. It’s not a job when elected it’s a responsibility. How many times is something passed quickly and people find out weeks later?

            • Polar Pop Police on October 13, 2017 at 8:05 pm

I would take an educated guess and say that the majority of local street repairs done in the past 3 years are not state or fed funded, correct? If so, they should have been done by our own city street dept. Right now we are paying top wages and benefits for guys to patch pot holes or cold patch a 25 ft section? What a miss managed waste ! Bebe, Barberton is now up to $10 local tax on all license plate stickers done at the bmv, where is the extra $5 per sticker going? Good stuff on the emergency vote & mayor autho. Both need to change !!
              Best of luck!

          • stupid on October 11, 2017 at 8:21 am

            • Chris Ison on October 11, 2017 at 10:06 pm

We could have if the current administration would stop wasting money. Phil Canfora just received a five year 100k lease from our elected officials without citizen input. Call the city officials and ask them how much they spend on contracts without qualified oversight. Your opinion would change real fast.

            • Polar Pop Police on October 13, 2017 at 7:56 pm

They do have some and at one point they had a full fleet of equipment. It has been moth balled due to the subcontracting. If you invest in equipment it will save you money !! 81. Thomas J on October 4, 2017 at 6:23 pm

Given the horrible tragedy in Las Vegas, I believe it is time we start to have a conversation on gun control measures.

The Supreme Court ruled in the 1919 decision of Schenck v. United States, that you can not “yell fire in a crowded theatre.” This Supreme Court decision eroded 1st Amendment Free Speech Rights. This decision curtailed 1st amendment rights of Free Speech.

The precedent has been set. The Supreme Court CAN curtail rights found in the Bill of Rights. Why did no one protest the Supreme Court curtailing first amendment rights, but conservatives feel that no one can ever touch the second amendment? The Supreme Court precedent has already ruled that they can curtail rights found in the Bill of Rights.

Let’s take this argument to the next logical stage. The founding fathers believed that we should have a militia in case England tried to invade. They had no idea what an automatic, semi-automatic, or nuclear weapons were. If strict constructionists want to argue exactly what the founding fathers thought, then let’s make legal every musket and make illegal every other gun other than the musket!

Let’s also talk about this idea of a militia. The idea of a standing militia was to prevent a foreign government to invade. There were no nuclear weapons back then. Hence, the idea of having a “militia” is null in my opinion since governments have nuclear weapons and can wipe into oblivion militias. Thus, the idea of second amendment revisions is much needed.

    • SPD on October 6, 2017 at 9:35 pm

Well, we have terrorist organizations and criminals invading so the Second Amendment needs to be left alone.

      • Thomas J on October 7, 2017 at 7:58 pm

Can you please elaborate? What terrorist organizations and what criminals are invading?

If we really want a common sense approach to gun control, we would have a mandatory 20 year prison sentence for anyone found with an illegal firearm, as well as anyone on disability with a firearm.

I will not support any person, sports professional, or organization that disrespects our flag or the national anthem. Pubic officials and business leaders who condone such actions should be boycotted. Our forefathers have sacrificed too much for such negative actions. We Americans have very few instances where we can stand together shoulder to shoulder/arm in arm for one moment in respect of our nation.

Free Speech is in our Constitution, but should not be exploited during a such moments. Individual rights and Free Speech have no place in superceeding our Flag and National Anthem.

Kudo’s to President Donald Trump for taking a stand for America… over politics and personal views.

    • Thomas J on September 26, 2017 at 5:40 pm

I respect both sides of this debate, but I think we should all take a step back. Since when does kneeling during the anthem, mean it’s an attack on the military? It’s not an attack on the military, but rather a sign of obstacles that we, as a nation, still need to overcome in regards to race relations in our country. Would it be no different if Irish men of the 19th century took a knee to protest the “No Irish Need Apply” policies of our country back then?

Let us not forget the “Know Nothing Party” of the 19th century…a party that was Anti-Catholic and Anti-Immigrant. The Know Nothing Party wanted to keep America as a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Country. The times have changed, but the current of ultra right wing nationalism has not. In every age of our country’s history, there is a tenant of right wing populism that attempts to cast doubt on those “different” than us.

That said, would I kneel? Probably not, but then again, I do not live, nor encounter, the struggles that minority communities deal with. That being said, these communities need to understand the struggles that police officers, and their families deal with every single day. When Kapernick wears pig socks dressed up as cops, this does nothing to add to a thoughtful discourse, but rather, add to the nastiness of this topic. Kapernick was wrong in wearing pig socks, but so is Trump. Kapernick should have simply knelt. No need to fuel to the fire.

Trump is clearly playing a not so secret game of Dog-Whistling when it comes to racial politics. Trump knows that this issue is a win in the heartland (Not sure much in the rest of America), plus it takes away from his inept handling of Hurricane Irma and Maria. Trump is a master manipulator. He knows when to change the subject to take the heat off of his inept handling of domestic matters.

For people like John to claim that it is an act of “disrespect” totally misses the point the players are trying to make. BTW, it’s not like they are dragging the flag through mud or burning it. They are simply kneeling. If this is their reaction to kneeling, I would hate to see what they would do when people burn the flag, which the Supreme Court ruled in the 1980’s, was protected free speech.

Instead of taking your ball and going home, why not let’s all try to have a constructive dialogue about the issue of police misconduct towards minorities, but also attacks against police. At the end of the day, we all just wanna be able to go home to our families.

Why can a heroin addict overdose and be back at home that same evening with no criminal charges? Why is it that someone in possession of marijuana can get charged, someone drinking and driving can get charged, but a heroin addict can overdose in public and not get a single charge? Why is it OK for a heroin addict to tie up EMS and first responders and cost millions of dollars to the state and taxpayers to cover the cost of Narcan and these EMS runs?

Heroin is by far one of the worst drugs available and people are getting away with it on a daily basis. EMS workers are responding to overdose calls on a daily basis and these people get brought back to life and sent home, sometimes more than once a day. Where are the adult consequences for abusing as well as possession of an illegal drug? Any other drug user who is caught is not given that choice. They are arrested, charged and booked to await a hearing. It’s time to start making these people own up to what they are doing, it’s time to take away the freedom of having no consequences for the lack of, a “bad choice.” No one made them take the drug, they chose to do so on their own.

I know we all heard growing up, “Don’t let them pressure you to do something.” OK, I get that, but these are not kids using this drug. For the most part, they are adults with children of their own. Give them a dose of reality while they sit in a cell and think about what it is they are doing.

At any given moment, there are people on heroin behind the wheels of cars, sitting next to you in restaurants, in the parking lot at the school pick-up point, leaving needles on the streets for our kids to find. The courts and jails are full but that is still no reason to let this go on without disregard to public safety.

Let’s not wait until it’s too late and the cemeteries are full. There is a petition in Erie County, Ohio with the goal of making that change. They are trying to put enforcement behind the use of the drug. Why just them? We all should stand up and let our voices be heard.

    • Thomas J on September 26, 2017 at 5:47 pm

Correct me if I am wrong, but most communities DO punish people who overdose. In fact, the main problem is that people are afraid to call 911 because they are afraid they will get prosecuted. Again, please correct me if I am wrong.

And to play devil’s advocate, many of the Libertarian wing of the Republican Party would argue that the federal government should legalize most drugs and regulate it. If you regulate drugs, then people would not buy questionable drugs on the street that are lethal. Doing so would also cut into the Mexican drug cartels profits, since people would simply go to a Government Pharmacy where they know they can buy a safe and legal product. Let’s not even take into account the tax dollars the country and state could make!! This would increase government profit and reduce gang activity. Granted, this doesn’t take into account the negative externalities that would arise in society.

Dale, thanks for your reply. All I can say is that the county that I live does prosecute people who overdose. I was not aware that Summit does not. I think it is needed for the Federal Government to intervene at this point. Where is Trump? He needs to have a federal plan of intervention along with forcing insurance companies to cover treatment for people who want rehabilitation. Currently, health insurance does not cover a comprehensive rehabilitation treatment. This is the problem.

As Americans we have the freedom of speech. We can voice our opinions. The ViewsLine is an “OPINION” page. I don’t know or have ever met Michelle DeShon, but she is the “OPINION” page writer. To those of you who take issue with her “OPINIONS” should note she signs her name to her “OPINION” and doesn’t hide her feelings. I don’t agree completely with everything she writes, but I do agree our current President is unqualified. His constant rantings about how he is treated by the media, lashing out at anyone who questions him, yet has no problem making childish comments about other world leaders, comedians, and other politicians. I have experience with family members and friends who have had dementia and have seen it from the first stages. I hope he gets a complete medical exam.

The October 5th HERALD carried a Views Line stating that Michelle De Shon should be fired, shipped out of the city and the country, and fined heavily for her writing in the negative about President Donald Trump. She was called un-American as well. Like you, I do not claim that I agree with De Shon (as often I do not), but I thought that debate and discussion were sort of fundamental to our type of society. These folks should understand the concept of free speech and that punishment doled out to those who dissent flies in the face of it. Let the girl talk…maybe we could learn something from her! By the way, I have met Michelle De Shon and she is a charming young lady.
As far as goes President Trump, I voted for the guy and question the wisdom of my vote. He has managed to upset the country and in fact the world and I’m wondering when exactly he will get something accomplished. With control of both houses and a 5 – 4 Supreme Court he should have little difficulty, but look how it’s going.

Teachers or Parents fault? Our 3 kids do well in school. We as parents make sure they are doing homework and study for tests. Look in the mirror. Yep, there is the problem.

      • VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER on September 18, 2017 at 4:55 pm

So in your opinion, the success of any district is primarily based on parenting? To a small degree, I would concur. Then why are we over paying a failing group of educators that cannot succeed at their job when it comes to the kids that require a little extra help ? IN THE REAL WORK WORLD… you are paid based upon success and hard work. So if I tell my boss that my sales are down due to the economy he will simply hand me more money and pat me on the back ? Guy/gal works in a mfg plant and refuses to work O.T. a.k.a… doing the min hours his/her employer will continue to reward them ?? In both instances, chances are you would be fired. Does success and hard work seem to apply to this district ? I would say not.

Based upon your rationale, then we should just home school all kids here in Barberton and fire the entire teaching staff? Give me back my $150 / mo due over inflated school taxes and keep the welfare SSD & sec 8 kiddies a home. I am all in !

        • Thomas "Bebe" Heitic on September 18, 2017 at 10:58 pm

The correlation of other jobs to teaching is an uneven equation. If you’re a supervisor (teacher) and your job is to train new hires (students) and those new hires don’t care, you can fire them. Students who don’t put in effort can’t be “fired” so to speak.
The learning process goes beyond the walls of the school, if parents don’t push their kids to excel, what’s the point? You turn the teacher into a glorified babysitter. Should the teacher be held accountable for the uninterested student, or spend extra time on that one while neglecting the others?
And if you’d like your money back on property taxes, contact Tavia Golonski, our state rep, and tell her and others to stop ignoring the DeRolph decision and fix the state share of funding.

          Vote No,

Also, there is a HUGE correlation between income of a district and passage of the test.

You can hold your opinions, but districts who hold a higher amount of free lunches, tend to perform lower than districts that do not. And that is a fact.

Also, let’s do an experiment. For our experimental group, we will transplant teachers from Revere to Akron, and transport teachers from Akron to Revere. Do you think you will see that much of a change in test scores?

Also, let’s have a control group and transplant Barberton teachers to Cuyahoga Falls and vice versa. Based on the statistical analysis of the study I showed you, I would gladly go to Vegas and place a bet saying that the difference in test scores between Barberton and Cuyahoga Falls would be within the statistical standard of deviation of being near equal.

      Vote No,

I have several issues I would like to bring up. The first is that your statistics are flawed. You correctly state the performance index grades from 2013-2015, but what you fail to mention is that from 2013-2015 the state has had 3 DIFFERENT TESTS with 3 DIFFERENT standards of grading. The state of Ohio had the Ohio Achievement test, which many would agree was the easiest to pass, which would correlate to the high 90% passage rate. The state then switched to the PARC Test, which was harder, and then to the AIR test. The state of Ohio has had 3 different tests in 3 years, which is basically comparing apples to oranges to plums. You need to have 1 single test and study the reliability of that test over many years. Plus, let’s not forget, that Ohio keeps upping the percentage that they consider a passing grade. I could be wrong, but I believe in last year’s tests, every district needed something like an 80% to be considered passing. I am sorry, but the last time I checked, a 79% test is considered passing in HS and College. But according to the Ohio Department of Education, a 79% is not passing. Hmmmm

Last week, one of your writers wrote a story called “Trump excusing violence?”. This was found in the “opinion ” section of the paper. While I understand that it truly is an opinion and I can appreciate and respect it for what it is. It really is frustrating to me that your paper is becoming bias. Did your paper write about the BLM destroying property that didn’t belong to them? How about when they chanted about killing cops? How about when Obama welcomed BLM leaders to the White House? Maybe it’s obamas fault that a BLM felt empowered to be so destructive with no consequence. I don’t recall reading anything like that in your paper. If you insist on leaning to one side of the aisle, be prepared for the consequences. You WILL lose business. At least be fair to both sides.

Allegedly : If you do install a bat house, and it actually works and the bats take up residence, multiply and then spread to adjacent human homes, you may or may not be liable for injury, illness, clean-up and removal. Look at the bright side, all the bat droppings you now have will make an awesome fertilizer. You might also want to be sure all of your dwelling openings are secure. Once you get one in the attic or crawl space, they will continue to return.

I was hoping the HERALD would ask the new school super why the current budget still has an obvious shortage of some sorts hence the proposed levy. Why has this financial shortage not been addressed and corrected over the past 5 years? Numerous articles floating around stating that school funding from the State is at an all time high, so why are the coffer’s coming up short down there at Norton Ave ?? Bottom line, it is not about the kids. VOTE NO ON ALL FUTURE SCHOOL LEVIES AND DEMAND IMPROVEMENT ON ALL STATE REPORT CARDS. The schools are required to submit a five year budget to the state and contracts as such. The state changes funding every two years, so districts are constantly fluctuating how much the get based on the states budget. I’m in no way making excuses, I only want to show facts of why district not just our own are forced to renew or add.
Now for my opinion. The REAL culprits are every rep and senator at the state level that choose constantly to ignore and essentially be in contempt of the state supreme court rulings (12 now) that their model of funding is excessive on property tax and need changed. Every one of them should be voted out and the new ones put on notice that they will not make a career out of hosing property owners.

      • sue on August 29, 2017 at 2:25 pm

Not required – open house is for students to get familiar with where they need to go and where classes are.

Not required LMAO. Microcosm if whats wrong with this district. Some teachers attended and others did not because it was “not required” ? Guess doing the least is the best Barberton can do? Guess what, homeowners are not required to pass the tax levies. VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER.

      • In Gotto We Trust on August 28, 2017 at 2:23 pm

Where can you verify your claim that this is a renewal ? I see no info to support your statement. I will vote NO because this district’s report card with the state continues to plummet. At last check, they were in the bottom 1/3 of the state rankings. Why reward a district that does the state minimum on every academic level? Does your employer give you pay raises based upon performance or do they hand out money every time you ask for it ?
LEVY TAX DOLLARS GOES TO THEIR POCKETS, PENSIONS & HEALTH CARE. Has nothing to do with the kids. If most taxpayers only knew the truth about how school funding works.

        • Mel on August 31, 2017 at 3:22 pm

There are 2 articles from floating around the Internet that have incorrect information about the upcoming levy from Barberton Schools. Please be advised that the upcoming levy is NOT an increase. It’s just a renewal of the approved 2013 levy.

We will share more information soon, but we at least wanted to clear up any confusion the articles may have caused!

          • NO IN NOVEMBER on September 2, 2017 at 6:01 am

Until you can provide solid proof of your claim, you are the one creating confusion. Maybe the new school super should call the Herald and verify or the Herald call him ?? Either way, vote NO. This district has not earned what they have gotten via the taxpayers over the past 2-3 years. That is why Patti jumped off the ship, district is clearly in decline and state rankings prove it. VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER. NO TAX DOLLARS PERIOD UNTIL PERFORMANCE IMPROVES!

    • Chris Ison on August 30, 2017 at 10:35 am

The problem is when this was negotiated it was proposed to council as a emergency without citizen input. The current council have a habit of doing this. They suspend the rules of the charter just to pass legislation that need input from everyone not just a group. The contract can be renegotiated when it expires. The contract needs to have free bulk pickup and can be negotiated, or they can be replaced. This type of negotiation needs to happen. The difference in business minded people and politicians.

TIP ON HOW TO COMBAT THE LOCAL DRUG PROBLEM : Remember back in the day when ALL PERS and or city employee’s had to live within the municipality in which they worked in ?? We need city employees who care, not ones who just cash paychecks with Barberton on them ! You would see improvement across the board in all civic area’s if this old policy was re-instated. You think a Barberton city employee who lives in Copley or Wadsworth gives a hoot after they clock out and go home? Just something to think about. CIVIC PRIDE can be a powerful tool.

Amen to that as well. I can’t tell you how many times they’ve been called to a known felons home, and advised that he has guns in the home, but they’ just smack them on the hand and move along. Now that there was a shooting there maybe they’ll look into it a little deeper. To my knowledge a convicted felon is not supposed to be in possession of a firearm .

  102. SPD on July 20, 2017 at 10:42 am

Funny here how people are complaining about the Mosquito District’s measley 6 dollars on the property tax bills. What you REALLY should be concerned about is that 71% of your property taxes go to the Barberton City Schools. THAT is the real issue! Take a look at your bill and see the breakdown. You’d be shocked!

    • Mrs. Crabtree on July 20, 2017 at 8:46 pm

Has anyone LAZY and the Lack of Property Pride, so many Residents are demonstrating, when they allow the Grass / Weeds on the devil-strips..between sidewalks and road to grow 2-3 Feet tall?! They mow their own yard..but too apathetic to wheel their mower or take a weed whacker out to the street..! It makes the whole Neighborhood look Terrible. What’s WRONG with people these days? the City needs to start handing out citations.

    • SPD on July 17, 2017 at 4:53 am

They should. People are responsible as property owners to maintain that. My devil strip looks superb, even better than some areas look in fact.

    • GrassMan on July 22, 2017 at 6:25 pm

Good chance that these devil strips are zoned in the city easement = maybe the city should be cutting the grass??? I was told that the city has easement rights that extend into your property either 15 or 16 ft from the center of every road. Myself personally I would take care of it, but I could see someone saying “no”. Call your council rep and put them to work on a clarification.

      • Triska on July 25, 2017 at 1:02 pm

sidewalks and devil strips may be city property but it is till our duty to take care of them you can still get sued, if someone slips and falls on your section of an icy sidewalk in front of your house. and you still have to mow the grass there as well. that has always been a fact of owner responsibility, I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but the City can’t even keep the Parks mowed. why we all need to do “our part”..just common sense people…. if you see litter or a tossed trash bag in front of your home on the go out and pick it don’t just sit there and watch cars run over it scattering it all down the road making your neighborhood look terrible. I guess that is the difference between Apathy and Pride… Laziness and being Responsibly Conscientious. you will find the LAW here on this link…. about Property Owner’s Obligations, Rights and Permissions.

        • Just Curious on July 30, 2017 at 10:59 am

I see you have no issues holding your fellow neighbors and or magics accountable. Do you expect the same from your local leadership and tax payer paid city employees? I find it laughable how anyone could judge their fellow citizens in lieu of the poor civic services and the performance of said services this town is obligated to provide. Big picture here Triska, that’s the ticket!

  104. Lyn on July 16, 2017 at 12:58 am

I don’t know whom to report to, as I been told various departments, but because the flow of cars and esp emergency vehicles up and down 28th sw is quite frequent, and no stop signs, on their side.. the BUSH that is growing at the basement house property at the corner of Auburn and 28th is getting out of hand and one has to pull clear into the crossing road ..just to look for traffic, which creates a hazard. (actually no good reason for the bush to even be there for safety purposes) nobody lives there, hope somebody does something, before we have a real bad accident.

    • SPD on July 17, 2017 at 4:55 am

whether or not someone lives there. Property Always belongs to “Someone” therefore you are a.) Trespassing and b.) committing Vandalism. btw: the bush has been a problem for decades. one year ..some teens attempted to burn it.. lol… it grew back!

        • ISPD on July 27, 2017 at 5:13 am

Depends on whether someone tells on you or not. Neighbors probably would not because they feel the same as you and want it gone. Bottom line, it is gone now so no worries.

    • Lyn on July 19, 2017 at 11:49 pm

thank you… the bush has been trimmed.. maybe could of been trimmed more….(or removed) ….so much traffic just whizzes up and down 28th… sigh…well guess they will… when someone sues them….being a corner lot… of only a 2 way stop.. should be totally clear. in my opinion. thanks again. that should be good for about a month…till it bushes out again.

      • GrassMan on July 22, 2017 at 6:32 pm

Who did the trimming? City, homeowner or a local resident?

        • Lyn on July 25, 2017 at 1:11 pm

I think the owner or whomever is in charge of maintenance did. they must of seen the post. again much appreciated, but they should really do the right thing, for safety reasons, the bush grows quickly, it does not “add” to any beauty or privacy to the home, it is just the right size to block “line of sight”..and 90% of all emergency vehicles use 28th as a quick short cut to all back roads here, (douglas, benton stratford, noble etc) due to min. stop signs and other cars just fly up and down the road as well. many years ago, a car was flipped on its’ side, trying to pull out across that road, from that very spot..I remember it well, as they attempted to upright the vehicle. hey whatever …its’ their property….hope they have good “umbrella insurance.” they’ll need it someday, everybody is “sue happy”. one would be crazy to chance it. let alone the safety of our ER crews.

I can not say enough about how well they treated me and the entire situation and on top of all that the car was absolutely perfect when it was complete. I live near the intersection of Summit and Orchard. The police if they had the time could catch quite a few people blowing through this intersection, not even slowing down for the stop signs. On the one way section of Orchard they speed down the street the wrong way to reach Wooster rd.
We have children on this street who use the intersection to cross to friends homes. On any given day you can count past 20ty the cars that never stop, do a rolling stop, or sneak down our street. More if you watch all day.
It might be a small matter for Barberton but it’s revenue. And it would make it a lot safer for those living here. Do these idiots drive like this all over Barberton. Help us out.

  108. Forgotten Tax on July 2, 2017 at 10:37 am

Has anyone noticed that the mosquito spraying has been for the most part non existent this spring-summer. Last season was very sporadic compared to previous summers. WE ARE PAYING FOR THIS SERVICE, maybe someone downtown can find out why most area’s have had zero to 1 service so far this year. You are taxed monthly for this!

    • SPD on July 4, 2017 at 7:15 am

I have noticed that it is very light as well. Also, there are not that many mosquitoes this summer as compared to other summers either so I am sure they know that too. Why spray if you don’t need to do so and waste all that material? I do know that if you have an area that IS in fact bad, you can call them and let them know about it and they will come out and spray your area. You can even have them cruise by just your yard and do that too. My neighbor has them do his once a year. They do private mosquito spraying and all you have to do is call. You pay taxes for that too so that service is also available as well and included with that little tiny fee you pay on your taxes.

The city of Barberton is a mess. I’ve lived here all my life and have never seen it this bad. All the parks are over grown, weeds the size of small children around the playground, potholes that could do serious damage to a car, some of the worst roads are not getting paved, grass is easily over 4 feet high in areas, and I still see leaf piles. What are the city employees doing? The leaders of this city should be ashamed to have it looking like this.

    • SPD on June 3, 2017 at 5:57 am

Some services are very lackluster – plowing in the winter, leaf pickup, street sweeping, etc. I was just saying how my area of town is on the schedule for Tuesday street sweeping and I have not seen the street sweeper around at all yet since they started. They used to come by all the time. I have a corner I live on andstuff has been on the street from tree droppings now for two months. I finally took a push broom out and swept a good part of the streets that are up by my property and cleaned it all up myself. Looks better than if the street sweeper would do it!

On 5-11-17 at approximately 3:30 pm, while driving on W. Hopocan Ave., I observed the Barberton SWAT tank and team members ascend on a W. Hopocan address. The officers surrounded the house with rifles and shields. I thought, “This must be a training exercise,” due to vehicle and pedestrian traffic was not stopped. In the future, could the extra step be taken to keep civilians out of potential crossfire by blocking off traffic? I immediately thought about the mayor’s State of the City Address on opiate activity in Barberton (we can’t just arrest our way out of this). After witnessing today’s event, I know that the City does have the means to arrest their way out. After living with 2 drug houses in my neighborhood for 5 years, the City of Barberton’s major blight of not arresting our way out of this is clearly not working. It’s obvious we have law enforcement potential, training and equipment to combat to combat the opiate frenzy in the 44203 district. If you lived in my neighborhood, you would appreciate real solutions that work to drive this activity out of our city. At present, we can’t walk out of our home without fearing bad situations. Our only hope is law and order restoration!

Even as this is printed this person is on probation, was evicted, took this coaches car keys, old cell phone and used it to get phone numbers, change the bank account password and money was missing from the coaches 8 year old son. What is even better is this person helped the coach with the team last year and attended all the wrestling matches with him this year. Seems to be a double standard here. Good read in ABJ regarding the surrounding area and tax levies on tuesday’s ballot. So this is the new trend for tax money grabs? How long until Mr. Judge wants more tax dollars to help fund his state of the city address and his proposed “follies” ?? Get ready, more of your hard earned dough will be drained away. How long until the new school super will be wanting more of your money to fatten the already fat wages and benefit packages? Hey local government [s], the blue collar coffers are dry ! Everyone is focused on Norton’s (out-going) superintendents personal attack on the basketball coach which has lead to the resignation of the entire boys basketball staff, 7th, 8th, 9th, JV and assistant varsity.

Now rumor has it that the athletic director, whom was hired by the superintendent and school board members less than a year ago, has been under investigation by the OHSAA for his involvement with a student/coach affair at his previous district in Canton. AND YOU HIRED HIM KNOWING THIS! The AD will also be forced to resign at the conclusion of this school year.

WAY TO GO NORTON! Once again, you are the laughing stock of every single surrounding district! You have a coach who is a long time resident of Norton and who has done NOTHING to justify losing his basketball coaching position. Now along with the entire boys basketball program, you will yet again be hiring another AD. I fear there will be other great coaches that Norton will be losing in the near future due to the negligence, wrongdoing, and unfair treatment of an incompetent school board and administrators who are nothing less than puppets!

Do norton businesses know their barberton neighbors cant patronize their stores because they never make it past cleveland massilon road. Shame on norton law for breaking the law. Norton, goodbye from a barberton customer. Cheesebarn or not, you are isolated by your own greedy cops.

    • Car 54 on April 11, 2017 at 10:36 am

Norton is fairly aggressive on non-residents. You will notice that even though Norton boarders Barberton, they have little to no crime or drug issues. You cannot have it both ways these days folks. I would gladly take some aggressive street patrolling here in the Tragic City. In order for a vehicle to be impounded there has to be a violation of certain laws. Booze, drugs, no insurance, driving recklessly, etc all reasons for impound. Number of traffic stops may be high in Norton but they send a loud and clear message to the trashy element to stay out. Back in the day your drove around Norton just to avoid a speeding ticket, now they are making your streets safe in a drug riddled county. From a jealous Barberton resident.

Norton has already duped Bill Judge into taking over their sewage issues. That proves how smart they are and how clueless the purple side is. The sharing of emergency services is just a ploy to make you think that it will save more lives and money, all window dressing. The only benefit that could have ever come from a merger would be saving taxpayers real dollars when it comes to the school districts. That would have made perfect sense but will never happen. Maybe when Norton streets are completely shot, we can take over their street problems too?

  130. Na on April 9, 2017 at 12:14 pm

Why has norton impounded over 100 cars in the past 2 months? This week a friend was pulled over for a routine stop, insured and liscensed- the driver was sited for reckless driving according to the same officer that the impound lot claimed had sent 30 cars that day. I was disgusted to learn from the owner that the impound owner had NO idea why, so he had much to gain, but didnt have a clue why norton was sending car after car his way. Is this how norton is paying for those new schools? Do their residents know their law enforcement is harrassing anyone who passes through their jurisdiction? Norton business owners- how will you make money if no one is making it past the barberton line? Wake up norton, your law is breaking the law.

Huh ?? How about a little less posing on billboards and a little more ole school police street patrolling? Have you heard about the drug house with 18 service calls and an over dose death? They should have been patrolling and making life miserable for anyone coming and going from that house after 3-4 calls. Maybe the police chief could team up with city ward council reps, get out into the neighborhoods to promote neighborhood watch groups? Anonymous tip lines? Druggies and criminals are a lot a like. They tend to not set up shop where they could get caught. Biggest problem facing this town is that leaders and residents alike only care about a problem if it is next door to their home. This is all about civic pride and I believe your leaders are NOT doing enough to promote this much needed tool in the local war on drugs & crime. Time to roll up the shirt sleeves and go to work, leadership needs to get this ball rolling!

      • SPD on March 29, 2017 at 8:41 am

I agree and it also helps with a little neighborhood teaming up too. Run them out on your own and make life miserable for them if the police do not step up. It worked for us in our neighborhood. Our area is cleaned up and we did the majority of the work ourselves.

In response to Sue: How about getting the horse to do anything at all! Has anyone seen the trash dump drug house on 17th St. n.w.? It was slated for a tear down and the city swung a deal as drug dealers/users reside there. Less than a year ago the Summit County Coroners hauled a dead body out as the Police and E.M.S.are there almost daily, in fact three times this week alone. It is a criminal and druggie flop house. The city can’t enforce the housing code violations as the mortgage company is out of state and does not respond to any court summons. The city has proved itself impotent on this neighborhood atrocity. Let’s face it the city is overran with drug mopes and crimes associated with it as Police are not able to effectively deal with it. According to the outrageous Summit County zip code statistics on this matter,
So, all the hype over providing clean needles or free plastic bags for prescription medication disposal is as unrealistic solution as you could ever imagine.Wake Up! Great victory for the poverty stricken and lower middle class when Trump Care was dropped dead by his own Republican minions. The real issue with health care cost is due to Republican backed medical and pharmaceutical companies being allowed to monopolize costs. When you can go outside of the U.S. and get the same drugs for 1/10 of the cost here , you have a monopoly. Don’t blame Obama and the ACHA for your rising costs, blame the Republican greed and reluctance of employers to provide solid and affordable health care for it’s workers. Ask yourself, could your employer contribute more to your health care cost? Now your employer drives a Jaguar, has 2-3 homes and a 7 figure bank account while you pay $1500/mo for medical. Remember not so long ago when most any middle class job had NO healthcare cost? What’s changed? = greed / monopolies.

From ABJ March 7 : An effort by Barberton, Norton and Copley Township to create a watershed district that would raise funds to fix mutual flooding problems has hit a snag that surprised local officials. As it turns out, a big chunk of Barberton and a handful of homes in Norton already belong to another district that collects an annual tax to help with conservation projects. No one in the three communities were aware that the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District reaches into southern Summit County. Barberton Mayor Bill Judge and Service Director Mike Vinay said when the three cities started discussing how to work together to find a solution, they had no idea that Muskingum encompassed much of the east side of Barberton. NOT KNOWING YOUR OWN WATERSHED DISTRICT AFTER YEARS OF WORKING ON FLOODING ISSUES….. PRICELESS !

If I was a Norton Panther, I would be concerned with the current and future waste of dollars up at the high school. Your school district will now seek levy after levy for the next 8-10 yrs. Your town leadership group is a mess. The most astute person in Norton with some gumption is David Houpt. As a community, you need to seek this person out and get him into local politics. Barberton leadership is not much better by any means. We have too many paycheck casher’s and blind eye politico’s here. My goodness, we have a B-Ton drug house that needed 18 calls and an over dose death before even a misdemeanor charge was filed. At least both groups are consistent, hey ?

Police records showed at least 18 calls for service over the last two years at 102 N**wood St. for possible overdoses, including people found not breathing and vomiting. Quoting from channel 5: Mayor William Judge said, despite the long list of possible overdoses at 102 N**wood St., a court case proving someone supplied the drugs at that address would be hard to prove.“An OD does not constitute that drugs are being sold there,” Mayor Judge said. “We’ve monitored that house,” adding, “What you know and what you can prove in a court of law are two different things.” IMOP…HOW SERIOUSLY ARE YOUR LOCAL LEADERS TAKING THE DRUG PROBLEM?? SADDENING!

      • Jason on March 6, 2017 at 3:38 pm

I’m sure Barberton PD is already a Task Force member which means the County already know about the problem at that residence. My question is whether or not the City of Barberton has a nuisance ordinance where they can fine the homeowner for all the times police are called there?

They are but it is better to skip them and go to the top. BPD just come out and ask questions and go. The Task Force will actually stake the place out and watch.

      • Editor on March 8, 2017 at 12:40 pm

According to Barberton Police Department Lt. Christopher White, the nuisance ordinance states that after three disturbance calls, the location is declared a nuisance and the owner receives a warning letter. If police respond a fourth or fifth time, they could be billed $100 for each occurrence. Any more than that and they could be billed $200.

He said as far as domestic disturbances and violence calls, they are not included in determining the property a nuisance and they do not get billed.

Then Jim Stonkus, president and CEO of the community foundation says: “About 300,000 people go down the Barberton stretch of the Towpath,” he said. “There’s so much opportunity here and you hear that from people starting to rediscover the city.” IMO…. SERIOUSLY?? Who or what is generating this 300,000 figure? I could see 300,000 customers going thru the McDonalds in one year, but patronizing the towpath/downtown area? Someone downtown must really have some pull at the ABJ. We need jobs and a game plan to bring retail to this town. Call Wadsworth and ask them for their jobs/retail recipe that stretches from downtown to Rt 94 past the highway over pass.

He probably means for the whole towpath. It does stretch from Cleveland to southern Ohio.

The CEO was quoted as saying ” Barberton stretch” of the towpath. I apologize, article was actual on the Plain Dealer webpage, not ABJ. Do a search engine and you can read the article.

I just wanted to say how thankful I am for the strong support the arts at Barberton Middle School gets from the parents, students, building staff, and administration. It really showed at the Art Show & Reception we had this past Thursday night at the Akron Museum of Art. With everyone’s support we packed the museum, and their staff was amazed at the turnout! I would also like to give a special thanks to Michelle from the Herald for covering the event. I am very proud of my students and the work they put into their artwork.

In the Army Medical Corps Medivac Training, one of the first things they taught us was the rotor blades are amazingly flexible and in windy conditions can go from two feet over your head to well below your hairline. In gusting high winds, crawling on hands and knees was acceptable behavior. They taught us the helicopter math equation: One rotating blade plus one body part = one rotating blade.

my husband was driving past PPG on Hudson Run last night 12:30am ish and there were Horrible fumes coming from there, that made his eyes water, nose burn…even came through the windows…anyone else notice this?

    • Sonny on February 9, 2017 at 11:53 pm

Nothing like a leisurely drive at 1230-1 a.m. I would suggest taking the scenic route thru Snydertown next time and skip the toxic fumes.

Didn’t smell anything after I left the bar at 2:30 AM. But I did see a UFO land in the middle of Hudson run.

Per the column: Marching for my rights and equality, I would like to see the writer of this article go with Madonna, and her filthy mouth friend Ashley Judd along with the woman who marched in D.C. to Saudi Arabia to really march for women’s rights. Go tell them how you FEEL oppressed, please use your voice to help women in other parts of the world who are denied basic rights. Apparently, it’s more liberating to parade around semi nude and yell obscenities (what kind of woman would walk around with a vagina costume with child around) than actually support women in other countries who have NO rights, and who are considered lower than dogs. I am disgusted with the woman who march in D.C. after the inauguration.
We are so blessed to live here. Yes we can always to better, but do not forget how fortunate we are. I am so proud to have President Trump to lead us to a brighter future. He wants us ALL to be happy and be able to stand tall to support our family’s no matter who you are. I can’t believe woman wanted Hillary as our president, she accepted money from the Arabs, they don’t believe in women’s rights (this is only one example). We need to work on U.S. issues first and get strong and take care of our own so someday we can be able to help others. Please wake up and support our President, we need to unite together. God Bless

What a shocker, a Trump supporter waving a finger at citizens exercising their constitutional rights. For shame! Not a female here, but to the best of my knowledge the “women’s rights” march was organized and set up prior to the election. The reason you witnessed a new piece of American history on inauguration day is because there is world wide concern over Trump’s election. You had women’s rights activists merge with the “not my president” population and this created a once in a lifetime event. The rest of your rant is just plain babble!

You think Hillary Clinton made deals in the middle east and Trump has not? Lets keep it simple here, lets start with Trump releasing his tax returns. Then let’s ** add ** the middle east countries Trump has done verified business in onto the travel ban list. I LIKE THE TRAVEL BAN, but it has been set up with extreme bias. Trump hangs up the phone on another world leader, one of our better allies. I could list much more hypocrisy and what is sad about that, we are less than 30 days into this regime. I will not condemn our leader and I am in favor of some of his idea’s, but the way this regime has conducted it’s leadership so far should be concerning. It is not about what “ideals” are best, it should be about how those ideals are presented and implemented.

        Get over it

I know “real facts” are hard to digest for those who believe in “alternative facts”. I hope Trump does well, but I have chosen to wear “neutral” glasses when looking at the facts.
No Dem or Rep bias. Heck, I voted for Kasich his first term and I am registered Dem.
