hey Herald… just got my Paper today.. Why did you change the Police Log Report Layout? usually you always insert the Street name… like aka man on Stratford reported….. or vandalism committed on Washington….etc. It is really Helpful to know WHERE these Crimes are being done (not the whole address but street name is important)..so We can be Vigilant….. Thank You.

OH MY! I used to Love – Peppe and Luigi’s – but now they Lost me as a Customer! Herald “Police logs” reported they had to use Narcan on am Employee ON the JOB?! Now imagine the Possible Fentanyl contamination to your Order, your Pizza Boxes or whatever, that can make a person sick just by the Touch… you, and your children at Risk! Trying to enjoy a Pizza. You can’t tell me the Boss didn’t know that Employee was doing Drugs.. no matter Which Drug…. How can we Trust them again? Employers need to Fire any Worker who does Fentanyl..or Any Drug…putting the Public at Risk. just mere trace can be Deadly, Everyone knows that! Shame on You P+L! *Mandatory Surprise Drug Testing at Every Place of Work is a Must! ..if for anything… their co-employees or the people who buy their products.*

    • triska on January 31, 2020 at 12:53 am

** as I mentioned “possible” …the police logs did not say which drug they were overdosing from. but not many use Narcan….to reverse, and/but still unacceptable, hope they were fired.**

      • Iconoclast on January 31, 2020 at 4:03 am

I have owned a business in Barberton for many years. I once had a lady in my employ who did a really great job. Good attendance, etc. One day she was picked up right at work by the law for drug related offenses. I can assure you I never had any inclination she was so involved, but I did not have her back after the incident. I think it unfair to judge the pizza parlor before learning if they fired the employee or not. My guess is that, like myself, they did not know and acted quickly to get rid of the person.

        • triska on February 2, 2020 at 1:19 am

very true Iconoclast, good point. and I apologize. but in these days, when Drug use is so way up, every other ambulance call is a Narcan run… I think…Drug Testing should be done once a year at ALL establishments.

          • Iconoclast on February 2, 2020 at 3:14 am

My 4 kids, all adults, favor mandatory drug testing for all persons on public assistance. They argue that most jobs today do drug tests so people can have employment and pay taxes but that recipients of Welfare who are given tax dollars are not so tested. My argument against this policy is that it would create a crime wave the likes of which we have never seen (as people will get what they need by whatsoever means necessary). The situation seems so hopeless and many police officers and retired policemen (one a former chief of police) I know quickly admit that the “War on Drugs” is an abject failure. About all we really can do is to pray for our country and keep ourselves clean. Good luck to us all!!!

There are times in life when respect is expected, Ex: You do not talk back to your boss or there will likely be a write up or other. Civil conversation is always welcome if one is open minded. Protocols are placed for a reason.
Many of us are older and have grown accustomed to how we were raised, in school we ALWAYS stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and our National Anthem, It came naturally our many parents raised us with respect in mind.
We did not have to be told or had to voice our opinion about it.
If so we found other ways to get our point across at the correct time and or venue.
I would think if I disagreed I would stay in the locker room out of respect and common courtesy.
So if this was a religious stance, perhaps be a faithful servant and remain in the locker room and then come out on time to participate as a team player. I do not claim to have all the answers but I certainly want to be fair to all. To the many Veterans from all the wars. I Salute you with Honor, Respect, and Love Thanking you for your service never seems enough.
It was a horrible time being a child not knowing if my brothers would come home from war alive and our Memorial is testament to the ones who did and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
To those of you who pray, I thank you for your prayers. Prayers are good and come from a person with love and insight.

  10. Triska on January 24, 2020 at 1:22 am

the Police should ask MORE Questions before they respond to a Call. They are NOT Your kids’ Parents, They are NOT Marriage Counselors, They are NOT the Landlord… Stop responding to Ridiculous Calls, and start concentrating on more Important things, like Where are all These Narcan Call drug users getting their supply…etc… and put a stop to the Dealers, catch the Thieves, Rapists and Vandals. The Citizens of this Town need to Grow up and take Responsibility for their own Problems… and Resolve them… not have the Police do it, unless a Life is Threatened. I find the Police Logs Preposterous. Arguments are NOT the Law’s Problem. It’s just a part of Life.

The book “A Warning” recently published sheds alot of light on Trump and his running of things. The House of Representatives (that is the Democrats of the House) exposed alot in the Impeachment. Bolton’s book is about to hit the stores. Yet the Senate will declare Trump not guilty and he will run and win the 2020 Presidential election. 4 more years! Perhaps Biden is right when he says America is losing its soul. Or, just maybe, the Democratic Party needs to examine itself and steer toward the center instead of heading for left field. We shall see.

If this is true, I am ashamed to have voted for him. Sad times in Barberton.

    • Kristi Evans on January 20, 2020 at 9:45 pm

Go to the City Hall main entrance and go down to the police records office and talk to Jackie. She’s very helpful and friendly. You can request police records with her and she’ll get you copies. I want to say that the office is on the ground floor. I am not a Soyars fan, by the way, but I would caution you that there are two sides to every story. Don’t be ashamed to have voted for him.

    • Tracy Soyars on January 22, 2020 at 5:58 pm

I would encourage you to get a copy of the police report and read the facts. The 18 year old girl, her mother, and her 17 year old boyfriend came to my house at 10:30 at night to start a fight with my 15 year old daughter. She received threaten texts from the adult female all day that day (which were provided to the police). Unfortunately, a fight did take place and my husband went out and separated the two girls. We have a ring doorbell and it captured this separation by Mike on video. We contacted the police and provided the text messages, audio recording and the doorbell video. We were asked by the officer if we wanted to press charges after all the information was provided. Knowing this young lady was getting ready to go to college, we decided not to press charges. This is a very unfortunate situation but there is a lot of untruths being put on this site,

Um. He took office, like, two weeks ago. Have SOME patience… I’m literally begging you. I learned more about how the roads are actually fixed and the process and time that requires, in an hour talking to Justin, than I have in years of living in the city. I saw some of the work he’s putting into learning this process and breaking it down, visually, specifically to teach the citizens EXACTLY how the process works. Based upon the comments here, it is clear that many previous council people never, ever took the time to do what he is in the process of doing, and many of them had YEARS to do it. And we – the voters – didn’t demand it. We just kept voting in our buddies and grumbling. Give it more than a couple of weeks, okay? Seriously. We didn’t let the city get this way in a day. Let’s don’t expect a brand new guy to fix the whole mess in a day.

“stand up or bench him” is about the most authoritarian puke I have ever heard of. Isn’t this America? Do we not have the right to protest evils in society? Should a high school ball club become a moral minority choosing who may or may not play based on their political views? This is madness indeed. Get with the times!

Bold accusation coming from a LOSER! Good news though, there is an anger management class directly across the street from AA that Mr. 2 years would definitely benefit from. In case Mr. 2 years didn’t know, body slamming a 100 lb. young lady is not only frowned upon, but more importantly ILLEGAL! If you think you can win in “2 years,” you are dreamin’ darlin’!

        • Kristi Evans on January 20, 2020 at 9:59 pm

And… AA has saved countless lives. Maybe folk who use that as an insult to others should check it out some time. I give that advice as one who knows the kind of irrational anger and immaturity that can lead to substance abuse. “2 years” may want to take a serious look at the rooms and people of AA, lest he find himself personally in need, with nowhere to turn. Peace out, “2 years”, get some peace, brother.

I keep hearing and seeing people talking about the past of Shaun Rocky Jaber’s criminal past but you have to pass a criminal background check to get elected? Being an ex councilman myself in the late 90’s in Wadsworth I think he is doing a great job of fixing this broken city. Keep doing a great job of fixing this corrupt town!

    • Kara on January 11, 2020 at 10:19 am

I’m a Ward 1 resident and Shaun Rocky Jaber is not even my councilman but he still went out of his way to help me with a neighbor dispute. I watch all the herald Facebook live and I watch the mayor and other council members laughing and joking around while we are in a 2 million dollar deficit. It is funny. The joke is on us. I hope other council members follow in Rockys mind set. Fix the problem from the top.

    • Kristi Evans on January 20, 2020 at 10:05 pm

It’s not about what he did or may have done in his past… that’s obviously long irrelevant. He’s a stand-up business owner and does much for this community – for YEARS, now. There are people anonymously bringing up his past because it’s all they have. They can’t outwork Rocky. They can’t campaign clean. They can’t inspire voters to vote for their friend. They can only slander a man who was voted in, fair and square, and who is actually working for change in City Hall, for us, *after* the fact. There is a lot of change that has come upon Barberton, thanks to the voters, but some of the old guard can’t come to terms with it. The past is all they have. It’s negative, ugly and very sad, actually. I’d ignore it, to be honest, and give anonymous slanderers some sympathy. They don’t have the good sense to be embarrassed by their behavior and they got nothing else to hang their hats on.

This country will not be torn apart by racial divide, the divide is economic and the Republicans are accelerating the process. We need UNITY as a nation and instead we have an INDIVIDUAL tweeting and ranting while residing in the White House. He is not for ALL people. We need resolve to issues that face us as a nation, not a mock dictatorship. You Repub backers are so easily fooled. You wave your flag while at the same time big corps such as gas, petroleum, medical and prescription drug companies are Republican owned / backed. George W Bush put together NAFTA which helped to send good paying jobs out of the country. So next time you tell someone a little less fortunate to go get a “better job” remember who destroyed those “better job” opportunities. If you truly believe either party on a national platform is doing anything for you and your daily quality of life, you are easily fooled. Try to help those a little less fortunate, you mind find it has its rewards. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL regardless of party affiliation.

Attn : Council Rep Wokojance. Don’t quit your day job. Your comments made to council concerning the fire dept and the financial workings of that dept confirm you know nothing about finance. Do you have any idea how much medical and pensions cost alone are per each union fire worker? Long term [ 20 years ], is million + per each worker. This town needs drastic cuts, not new hires !! RESEARCH AND CRUNCH DATA BEFORE YOUR GET ON YOUR SOAP BOX AND SPEAK. I appreciate and respect your time and effort but you have not done your homework!

Here is a modest challenge for ALL CITY COUNCIL. Contact communities within Ohio who use volunteer fire and private contractor ems / ambulatory. It works elsewhere, why not here ? RESEARCH AND WHEN YOU THINK YOU HAVE ENOUGH DATA, RESEARCH SOME MORE !! We keep going at these financial matters too fast and half cocked. We have to think long term NOW or the value of our homes will plummet over night ! Who will want to buy a home in a town with no jobs, drugs, crime and a city functioning financially solely on taxpayer tax hikes very year ?

  28. Lydia on December 23, 2019 at 10:42 am

You have to have goals: Everyone is so upset about the proposed Criminal Justice Center. I am not understanding the outrage, don’t we all want to improve our homes and lives at some point? Think about it for just a second, if you want to put an addition on your house, you don’t just wake up on a Tuesday and say, I want to put an addition on my house today, and then go out and put an addition on your house. It takes years of planning and saving. That is exactly what the city is doing about the CJC. They have to put the process in motion, does that mean, that today they are going out and building a CJC, no, that just means that they are hoping to one day build a new CJC. There are at least 827 steps to getting the CJC up and running, and they are on step 2.

Nothing against Progress at all. but “if a person gets laid off from work, they don’t go out and commit to buy a new car.” We need to put the Project on a back burner. the City needs to get back into the Black…. before any huge spending. and it isn’t just about *cutbacks, and selling off and taxation*…. that Alone…won’t bring us out of the Red by as much as we “Lost” when B&W left. We need some real “go-getters”….. to go out there and bring in an **Industry!** That will generate tax revenue. fyi: Just filling the Kmart building… isn’t “Major” enough. the City needs to think BIG and offer a good enough incentive, like how Akron nailed Amazon! the City needs a ~Think Tank Committee~… people who have inside info… about WHO is looking for New Locations… and what do We have to Offer? Stop Nickle and Diming…and Thinking Small and Hurting the People. We took a major Hit… Now we have to Think of a major Win!

  29. Lydia on December 23, 2019 at 10:05 am

After watching the video of the last City Council meeting, I am disturbed by the actions of Shawn “Rocky” Jabers who turned out the lights while council was in session. This is a direct violation of the Ohio Revised Code 2917.31 Inducing Panic, section A #3. Flipping the lights on and off during a meeting could have caused epileptic seizures, triggered someone’s PTSD or caused a complete public panic. This type of behavior can not be tolerated at any level and needs to be addressed. Also, his total disregard for authority is a little unsettling, telling the Safety Director that sometimes he needs to do things to “shake up” the norm, is not the best form of teamwork. http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2917.31

    • Big Chuck on December 23, 2019 at 5:50 pm

Agreed, this type of behavior from a council rep is concerning. Clearly a ” everyone look at me ” action. We need team players on city council, not individuals. Rest assured, Jaber has his sights set much higher than council. Be careful fellow Barbertonians, you have opened up pandora’s box by electing this guy.

      • Big Chuck on December 26, 2019 at 5:26 am

Granted, Lydia’s examples were a tad bit extreme but it was an excellent observation. “Shaking things up” would be presenting ideas or crunching data which is in short supply at council meetings. Flashing the room lights like a 3rd grader stuck inside on a rainy school day is a sign of immaturity. Other council reps and the Mayor better pay close attention to this guy, it’s only the beginning.

    • Becky Geier on January 5, 2020 at 11:00 pm

I think you are completely overreacting to Mr. Jaber’s actions. While it may have been dramatic it definitely did not incite panic or induce any epileptic seizures. For once we have a representative that is doing what he was elected to do, which is represent the opinions of the people in his ward. You don’t have to agree but don’t make it into drama. Mr. Jaber I might add is only trying to his job since no one wants to listen to reason. I for one find it refreshing for someone to speak up and say what others are afraid to.

The Water here tastes so disgusting, most folks buy Bottled. I suppose Next they’ll be charging us for Snow Plow Service… charge us for Owning Pets… start taxing us for Owning more than one Car per household… hey why not bring back Parking Meters? lol… gee All kinds of ways they can Dollar us to Death….Folks seem to enjoy Paying out Money..they Renew the Tax Levies every year, yeh not a new tax, but your Property Taxes would be Cheaper if you voted NO. Wake Up People… pretty soon we’ll be like Cleveland… paying an $800 water bill! Has Anyone else other than City Hall gotten a Decent Raise at Work or on Social Security Lately? because I haven’t. With all these Businesses packing up and leaving, the City is going to take it out on Us. How Many times have you seen 4 City workers all standing around watching One guy work? Speeders whizzing by parked Patrol Car and not getting a Ticket? I see Waste Everywhere…. and what we DO need.. like Many Roads Paved.. doesn’t get done! ~oh well… let’s just go with the flow~ we all have Money Trees in our back yards….Right? Time has come for city council to SOLICIT AND LISTEN TO HOMEOWNERS. Yes, short term we can band-aid the budget issues by taxing the homeowners over and over. Wrong approach. Time to get aggressive and down to the basics. ABJ had a great article today. Take the time to read this and you will be disgusted with your Mayor’s version of budget cut backs. Your biggest budget drain is the fire dept. RESEARCH THE POSSIBILITY OF DIS-BANDING THE FIRE DEPT as it exits now and transition over to a VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT. Let private ambulance and ems companies respond to 911 calls. Several towns have been doing this for decades. COUNCIL NEEDS TO TABLE THIS IDEA FOR RESEARCH AND DISCUSSION.

Your mayor will not do this, he wants to keep his overpaid and well compensated cronies intact. HERE IS BILL JUDGE’S IDEA OF CUT BACKS:

β€’ Seasonal workers weren’t hired this year.
β€’ Employees have been moved β€” that helped the general fund but created vacancies in city departments.
β€’ $800,000 of a reserve fund built up during his administration was used to help meet budgetary requirements.
β€’ An employee who moved out of state was not replaced.
β€’ The municipal building fund was restructured.
β€’ Elected officials β€” Judge, Law Director Lisa O. Miller and Finance Director Jeremy Flaker β€” will not receive pay increases.

What a financial genius we have in place acting as out mayor. Ridiculous! Don’t forget, this guy wanted a 15-20% pay raise prior to election.

Instead of taxing existing home owners, why not tax those who have rental properties? Tax the owners who have rental properties and institute violations for properties that are eyesores and not under code. It’s like Mayor Guiliani of NYC did when mayor, he went after little offenses, because he said little offenses that wasn’t dealt with lead to bigger issues.

I may of missed out on allot of News, so help me out here… Is the City Still going through with the New Justice Center? and all that expense… while we are in such dire need of money that we have to Tax folks to death? didn’t the City pay a bunch of money for that Lot? why are we Spending? re sell the land , auction off any buildings and city lots, we really aren’t using, cancel all Festivals, Parades and Concerts, and Fireworks, they really aren’t that great anymore anyways.. all kinds of ways trim a little here and there, it all adds up. but You have to Stop the Spending. and make sure 911’s are Really emergencies.. parents need to Parent and couples need to get their act Together… he won’t make the bed, she won’t go to school, he spit on me, he said she said…etc…… is NOT a 911 call! and stop the Narcan. or if you do..BiLL THEM! if they don’t Pay up, they Don’t get any more. Time for Common Sense, Buckling Down, Trimming the Fat. and no more Elected Official Pay Raises, Sell the City Parks, no one uses them Anyways…well maybe a few but not enough to justify the costs. just keep a couple. Macafferty can go, Edgewood can Go, Waltz can go, Anna Dean park can go…and more… we only need like 3 Parks… Let an organization buy them and let them take care of the grass etc. Reduce Waste..Cut Back… Don’t Over Tax!

    • Iconoclast on December 15, 2019 at 4:06 am

Now that’s what I’m talkin about!!!! Right on Triska! And if the big shots can’t stop the spending then let the city use the piled up monies in the Foundation. After all, when we sold the hospital the funds were to be used for the benefit of the people of Barberton, were they not? The money is there.

    • Whistleblower 2 on December 17, 2019 at 4:07 am

Interesting you mention the lot purchased for the new Justice Centre. The city purchased the property from the Husseins for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Remember the old run down building and the parking lot filled with huge pot holes? Was not worth $50.000! Here’s the rub…from whom did the Husseins purchase that land not that long before the city paid such an outlandish price for it? If that land had still been owned by the previous owner it would have looked bad for a certain mayor. Follow the money on this one and you will doubtless end up at city hall. It is one of those curious situations where corruption is covered over. “Fake News”? Take a gander and you will see.

I thought one could not print slanderous material here. The Pit Stop was worth more than $50,000. That is a lie, anonymous Mayor Judge supporter. And… purchasing the property does not mean that we have the money for a justice center now, does it? So, we have more vacant land that the city is responsible to keep up, yes? Where – while we are dying and businesses have a legendary, routinely hard time opening here, as opposed to other towns – does Judge intend to get the money for the build? Grants? If so, what rights do we have to give up in exchange for the grant money, if any? Loans? If so, what are the terms? I can say with confidence that if the income tax passes, there will be no sneaking that revenue into a justice center. The citizens have had enough.

BREAKING NEWS: Mayor William Judge has requested a withdrawal of both pieces of legislation. once again you have it wrong HE DID NOT ASK IT TO BE WITHDRAW. Carla Debevec Did. Why does this paper keep trying to make this man look good when he’s done nothing for this city but help he’s friends out with jobs that they do not do.PLEASE STOP REPORTING FAKE NEWS IT DOESN’T WORK ANYMORE

    • Barberton Resident working in Norton on December 10, 2019 at 7:23 am

Thank you Mrs.Debevec for thinking of us! Keep em fair!

    • Iconoclast on December 11, 2019 at 3:46 am

Whether it was Mayor Judge or Ms. Carla that got this idiotic proposal removed…THANK YOU! Flip side of the coin is that they now want the voters to approve a property tax increase to cover the monies desired. Is that an improvement? Now most of the highest paid employees in the school system and even one city “cabinet member” all of whom live outside the city limits will get a free pass when they pay their property taxes to other municipalities. Didn’t we just pass a ten year school levy? Does the well of the pockets of the taxpayers have no bottom? Thankfully the issue appears to be set to be thrown to us for a vote in March. I got a fin says it fails bigly. The real solution is to spend less…less on the crooked firemen and their ridiculous overtime, nix to the “Criminal Justice Center”, etc. We can live without some services but can the city tighten its belt? Let’s see some sacrifice at town hall.

      • Barberton Resident working in Norton on December 11, 2019 at 7:04 am

I agree with most of what you’ve said but how do they get a pass? Dont they pay income tax? And if they live outside of the city then we’ve never had the tax from their properties? πŸ€” perplexing…

        • Iconoclast on December 12, 2019 at 4:01 am

Many of Barberton’s top paid folks, especially in the school system as well as at the hospital, etc. live outside the city. They pay their property taxes to other cities while enjoying our roads, police protection, and (very well paid) fire protection. Those of us who live here pay for the schools and city services which these people enjoy free of charge. Now we are being asked to foot the entire bill…in fact to pay more to cover the city’s monetary shortfall. Many Barberton homeowners are on fixed incomes and many are struggling to just stay afloat. It is hardly fair to put the burden on the homeowner while those getting the biggest chunk of change from our city are not willing to pitch their tents among us and shoulder their share of the burden. The proposed property tax increase must be judged as unfair for that very reason.

          • Barberton Resident working in Norton on December 12, 2019 at 7:32 am

Yeah it’s not our fault B&W is leaving or left. Time to make some cuts! Does anyone know the total number of homes we have here? Just curious.

and the neighborhood B&W is moving into is becoming a war zone so they got that going for them.

            • AModestProposal on December 13, 2019 at 4:00 am

May I make a modest proposal on the city saving money and thus not having to further bleed us taxpayers (both personal and property):
Many communities have a volunteer fire department. Let’s face it, if a real house fire comes all that the fire department will save is the foundation of the house if that. Follow that with contracting with Summit County for sheriff service and eliminate the salaries and vehicles, etc. that come with having a department of our own. Other folks, such as is the case with Coventry, do just fine that way and if you read the police log we are facing some drunks, a weenie wagger or two, and the ever present shoplifter. I’m sure Summit County is equipped to handle such big time criminals.
The savings would more than bring us out of any financial crisis and eliminate the need to talk lots of new taxes which we can not afford (at least some of us!!!).

If some of the accusations on this forum are true these citizens who witnessed an alleged public intoxication of a certain political leader need to step forward at the next council meeting. Will the current Council which seems to be in the Mayor’s pocket be the ones voting on the proposed tax increase? Or will it be the soon to be seated new Council? I can’t picture Bebe Heitic or Rocky Jaber supporting this tax. Furthermore, it would not seem right to make this decision at this time with a changing of the guard literally days away. Frankly, I do not see Judge prevailing in the matter. Better yet, throw the issue to the people in an election and let them decide. If we fall short on money then let’s cut some services and big goofy ideas like the so-called Criminal Justice Centre as well as the totally crazy amount of overtime firemen and other city workers are taking. Just saying

      • Big Chuck on December 5, 2019 at 9:56 am

Your council is not so much “in the mayors pocket”, most of them are just in it for a part time buck $. Attend one 30 minute meeting a month for $1000. Pretty nice gig ! I had one rep tell me so when he ran for council a few years back and he actual held the spot for 1 term. He never returned phone calls or got out to chat with residents or police his ward. 1st order of biz much needed: Take away council’s ability to “emergency” every issue on their table. We as voters gave them this right years ago and it needs to be rescinded asap. Council needs to start researching tabled topics and digging deeper instead of voting “yea” on everything so they can hurry home.

gee what Wonderful DREARY Weather for trick or treat! you know between distracted drivers, creeps and unpredictable weather and fewer houses participating.. why doesn’t Barberton just HOST Trick or Treat….. in a couple auditoriums, one for elementary, one for middle school, parents can set up booths, decorate and hand out treats Inside. and make it a Party! Safe, Warm, Dry…no texting drivers in cars to worry about, no weirdos, ..it’s so far and few between houses these days for kids, and no fun ..lots of walking…when the weather is bad, would be safer and more fun, they can even make a mini haunted house and all… separate the ages, between 2 schools..or run them on different nights or days… to not over crowd… even maybe show some spooky kids movies too on a big screen..so many really cool things can be done with an Indoor Environment and would be More Enjoyable for the kids and parents. Wake Up Barberton… the Tradition of Neighborhood door to door Beggars Night is not longer a Good idea.

    • triska on October 27, 2019 at 6:11 pm

besides, daytime trick or treating has really taken the “fun” out of beggars night. accent on NIGHT. those purple and orange lights you hung, don’t shine well, you can’t really see if the jackolantern is lit, and it’s hard to hide behind a bush in daylight to scare the kids.. LOL..I used to do a strobe light and everything… you just can’t really do up a yard like you used it, it has lost it’s effectiveness. tradition or not, it’s already been ruined. indoors you can bring back the blacklights and strobe lights and all…. but no one in Btown probably has the motivation to bring about a plan for a major change to beggars night and bring back the fun, and not to have to deal with the weather and lots of walking. so just like our great city wide yard sales, pleh! other towns seem to do well… we’ll continue to Fail… until it’s a dull flicker of so called pathetic fun.

Things you can do with $5 …. #1 Get one cup of coffee at Kave. #2 Purchase 2 gallons of gas (approx.). #3 Buy one gallon of milk and a loaf of bread. Any one of these purchases is not that noticeable over the course of a year, we all do these things without thinking, sometimes more then once a week, because it is only 5 dollars. But what if everyone in Barberton put 5 dollars a year into a fund that would help improve our streets, something that we all benefit from. That is what the Governor is suggesting the cities to do. The suggestion is that everyone pays an additional $5 on their license plates that would be kept by the local government and could only be used for roadway improvement and maintenance. Yes, we would have to pay more for our plates and people with multiple cars would be paying more then those individuals that only have one or maybe don’t have any cars. But I for one, will not miss one cup of coffee per year in order to have better streets. And as a family that is blessed to own more then one car, I surely don’t mind throwing an extra 5 in the pile because I want to be part of the solution.

Or, you can save $5 a week into a savings account paying 2% and you’ll $262.57 at the end of 1 year. And, yes, there are savings accounts paying this. Our local government squanders our money and hasn’t fixed the roads yet – just used the bandaid method. Also, for some, buying a gallon of milk and loaf of bread is the difference between living and starving to death.

Lake Anna = Lake Keep Out….no feeding ducks, fishing, swimming, smoking and the list goes on. Maybe to preserve its pristine beauty we could borrow an idea from President Trump: put alligators in the lake, surround it with an electric fence and top off the fence with flesh piercing spikes. The BPD could shoot violators in the leg so they could not get away from “justice”. I think we might be better served to leave O.C. Barber alone and work to get rid of the crazy man in the White House!!! By the way, history shows that Barber was like Trump, a crook who did not pay his bills. Still they are our founder and our president so we gotta show proper respect. I did prefer the cannon though.

    Ethics 102:
According to the City of Barberton’s website: ww.cityofbarberton.com/documentcenter, all public officials “agree to comply with the Ohio Ethics Laws as listed in the Chapters 102 and 2921 of the Ohio Revised Code”. When I looked that up, It states that any public official must submit a financial statement report by the 15th of May every year. My concern is that when Mrs. Debevec stated that she didn’t know she didn’t satisfy all the judgements against her until someone brought it to her attention, how did she honestly complete an Ethics statement every year for the past 8 years that she has been on City Council?

why don’t you worry about the mayor and ethics taking money for he’s re elec mayor from all the outsiders. and losing the Silver League softball

      • Lydia on September 24, 2019 at 8:50 am

Losing the Silver League softball was due to a lack of funds in the parks dept. Hosting them did not boost our local economy, because they did not shop at any of our local shops; and actually cost the City money by having the lights on and having staff clean up after them.

And in my opinion if someone wants to donate money to a campaign, I don’t really care where they live as long as the money is from a legitimate source, I am not sure why some people are offended by this.

        • concern barberton voter on September 24, 2019 at 3:40 pm

wow they spend money all over the town your wrong again and for the donate money back door again. Just admit your mayor will make this city the laughing City of the state. I will pay your company tax payer money and you give me money for my campaign. nothing wrong with that. LOL

And start looking at the people in charge that have done nothing NO STREETS MORE FLOODING AND LESS JOBS. thank you Mrs Debevec for putting yourself out there. letting people talk trash about you and not talking about the other people. Maybe voter will start caring about the city and voting for good people. Not just talking and not taking action.

    • The truth on September 26, 2019 at 4:02 pm

Lydia please tell me that you at least voted for someone, or that you live in Barberton? Or are you one of the financial supporters our “mayor” has. Mrs Debevec made one mistake and tried to fix it but something slipped through the courts. Have you ever made a mistake??? You must be a saint to run your mouth about a lady who only wants good in the city….. Let me know how your “mayor” does in the next race, o wait he will not be apart of it he will be going to the state level to ruin more. He did not care about little Barberton he cared about his name and the money coming in.

      • Lydia on September 27, 2019 at 11:43 am

Yes I did vote and so did my entire household. Yes I live in Barberton and I am part of a multi-generational family that lives here. Yes I have made mistakes. While I don’t doubt she wants good for the City (as we all do), there is an honest way to achieve success, lying on ethics reports, not being transparent on her decision to run for Mayor and using misleading tactics to get people that do not live in Barberton elected do not make a positive impression on me.

As a Veteran I served OUR Country so we all can have an opinion and the liberty to express it freely. But I can say that when the storm was raging in our City and the streets were flooding, Mayor Judge was out there hip deep in the flooding with State Rep. Tavia Galonsky, while Mrs. Debevec stated “it was unsafe for her to be out there” and was nowhere to be found until that storm was over and the reporters were around. I personally want someone that is willing to run full force into a dangerous situation to help people in need, not someone that doesn’t want to get their nails dirty.

        • The Truth on September 27, 2019 at 6:23 pm

Lydia is that before or after he was on the golf course drinking beer for Ilene Shapiro’s golf outing? Congratulations that he came down in his useless RV and showed up. Maybe he can show up to meetings and not just at elections. Again thank goodness in 4 years he won’t be in OUR city. Let me know where all the funding For our city because he just cuts it right out and only helps the people who help him.
I’m pretty sure he is as dirty and scummy as it gets in the history of Barberton politics. However on that note thanks for being part of the problem and not the solution.

Thank you for serving I truly respect you for that one.

        • Carla Debevec on September 28, 2019 at 5:01 pm

          Kindness 101:
Treat others the way you want to be treated. This is the way I was raised and the way I have raised my children.

Lydia…I am extremely grateful for your service to our country! I value all opinions and everyone’s right to freely express them. For this exact reason, I will always sign my entire name to anything I write or post.

I value YOUR right to have an opinion of me and my “unethical” actions, but respectfully disagree with you. The accusations you have made against me aren’t expressed as opinion, rather, they are eluded to as fact. I have been reluctant to defend myself, but the complete defamation of my character, even weeks after the election, must be addressed for the sake of my family. Personal attacks are ruthless and hateful!

First of all, the financial statement reported under Ohio Revised Code was completed online by me. I was unaware of the outstanding debt, therefore, how could I report it. I would NEVER intentionally lie. If you knew me you would know that about me. Secondly, I followed all rules and procedures for filing to run for mayor. I wasn’t sneaky about it. I understood the gravity of the decision and what I would be subjecting my family to, and for that reason I collected signatures quietly while I continued to pray about whether or not I should proceed. This was not an easy decision, and it truly wasn’t made until the final hours. Finally, I’m not certain what your final claim about misleading tactics is even regarding.

I’m also unsure where you got your information about the flooding and my lack of willingness to help or get my nails dirty, but that is absurd! Again, if you took a few minutes to get to know me, you would know that I often participate with time and money to causes near and dear to my heart and rarely announce where or what I did. I help others because I want to and not for recognition. At the end of the day, I have to be able to lay my head on my pillow and find peace. I am at peace with my actions.

Ultimately, I respect every American’s right to vote for the candidate they deem best…that is one of the freedoms you fought to protect! I gracefully accepted the Barberton citizens’ decision not to elect me and called the mayor immediately following the election to concede and congratulate him. We all love the magic city!

This is why we can’t have nice things! I have been hearing a lot of people say that with K-Mart closing soon, they will be forced to shop at Dollar Tree or Big Lots. So I am asking each of my fellow Barberton citizens to keep in mind this one simple thing. I am sure you would not like someone to come to your office and knock things off your desk and then walk away. This is what I see people doing to many retail customer service people all the time. Please be considerate, if you knock something over, pick it up, and if you have to wait in line, keep in mind that they are only one person, they don’t control the staffing, their hours, or the temperature of the store. If we all work together and show a little pride in ourselves and our City, we can all enjoy living and shopping here for a long time.

I think it a better assumption that Mayor Judge paid Carla Debevec (the last candidate to enter the race) to throw her hat in the ring just to steal votes from the GREEN HORNET. If he would have gotten Carla’s votes, he’d be Mayor today after all.

  64. Lydia on September 10, 2019 at 1:08 pm

So Mrs. Debevec, sends out a flyer using a photo of people that are on the record as supporting her opponent and she thinks that will convince people to vote for her. Anyone with any knowledge at all, knows that our current Mayor is being supported by our state Rep. So either she really believes that those people are supporting her, or she thinks you (The Voters) are gullible enough to believe it. As per her history, she again waited until the last possible second to put those flyers out so the people photographed couldn’t publicly announce they were not supporting her. Sneaky, we don’t need that in our town.

I realize that everyone wants “change” and I agree that we do need to continue to focus on moving forward and developing our Beautiful City. However, one person alone can not force a change, just because we want one. Instead of working with the current administration to develop lines of communication with agencies that have the power to help us achieve our goals, one candidate suggests that we allow her to jump right in as Mayor because she has a plan. Which in her own voice, just one week before the election, she didn’t have time to develop yet. Additionally, calling her co-workers (City Council) out in public by saying she is the “only one that askes questions or does any research” is not a good way to start a relationship with the people that will be voting on and creating legislation for her “plan”.

Has had 8 years to do roads. 8 years to bring in jobs or keep jobs. I think it’s time we look at someone else. WE CAN’T KEEP GIVING TIME. if you work at your job and can’t do it for 8 years you would be let go.

Mrs. Debevec seems to be getting a free pass here based upon your break down. She had a responsibility on City Council, did she fulfill her job duties? I believe she also held some sort of a financial related position, how did she do on that? She has been part of the inner workings in this town during Bill judges tenure. So why the free pass? Trust me when I say, I am not a fan of Bill judge but I really do believe that his female constituent leaves a lot to be desired. Her resume is mediocre at best. When the voters of this town passed on Bob Genet years ago, they made a vital mistake that is now magnified more than ever. Obviously that is old news, it is just a sad State of Affairs politically in this town. Pick the lesser of the evils. Brookins really seemed to have lost his zest for the job here over the past month or so, he should consider issuing a public apology to anyone that signed his petition or gave him any consideration.

Just a word in defense of Mayor Judge….he is hardly a do nothing Mayor. Judge repaved my residential street and when we had a blighted house thereon he, after being made aware of it, acted and had the place razed to the ground. He repaved Second Street (where my business is located) as well as the alley behind my shop. Furthermore, Mayor Judge has always proven to be kind and helpful whenever I have approached him to help solve a problem. Unfortunately soft speech and diplomacy seem to have gone by the wayside over the last forty years and what would have been called a fundamental lack of charity has taken their place. Bashing peoples personal lives is so like our President who has managed to upset things at home and around the world with his crass verbosity and mindless attacking tweets. Let’s give Judge a chance. I think he’s a good Mayor.

          • Frankie Facts on September 7, 2019 at 6:06 am

Paving a street with an increase in tax dollars or tearing down a crumbling old house is remedial work for a mayor at best. You are setting the mayoral bar very very low. We need jobs, increased growth within our business tax base and help with local crime and drug abuse. The mayor’s secretary could have organized those types of functions and my guess would be she probably did.

To be fair- I listened to both speeches, one by the Mayor Bill Judge and the other by Carla Debevec. Mrs. Debevec started her speech by stating “She didn’t finish her platform outline because she ran out of time this morning” I would think that if it was the week before an election that should have already been laid out with a proposal on how to implement it at the start of her term. I have heard many times that she didn’t have time to research something for a council meeting or that she “forgot” her notes, but was hoping for more of a time commitment as our Mayor. So my question is, how can she run a city and all it’s moving parts, if she can’t even manage her own schedule. I am pretty sure she had the same amount of days leading up to this public event as Mayor Judge did. Am I expecting too much?

Imagine if you will that you are used to making 100K a year and life is rolling along just grand, then someone comes along and takes 80K and tells you there is nothing they can do to help you and you will just have to figure out how to live with the 20K you are getting. That is what has happened to the current Mayor. No one could make that adjustment easily, and it could take years for anyone to recover from that kind of a drop in income.

In just five days the people of Barberton shall elect a new Mayor and put several in the general election for city council. This may be the most important vote you have cast in years. Flooding and wasteful spending are the hot button issues. I propose that the following persons would be great choices to get the jobs done instead of proceeding down the path of business as usual to which we have become accustomed:
      First, as Mayor, “The Green Hornet” Steve Brookens would address the flooding, lower the ridiculous salaries of top level city officials, and get the police some decent cruisers. He is “the man” and deserves a chance to do what the Ken Cox political machine has failed to do;
      Second, “Rocky” Jaber or as I call him “Mr. Barberton” can do a splendid job as fourth ward rep. He is a businessman and a walking work of charity who has pledged to donate his entire council salary to the youth of Barberton. What a guy! We need him for sure;
Third, Thomas “Bebe” Heitic although a Republican (as you know most Barbertonians are Republiphobic) has a home in one of the flooding zones and would be a sure bet to help cure that problem along with others which beset the town.
I urge my fellow voters to get out and get this new blood in city hall. I have great hope that this dream team will move us forward on the new road. As the song says, “the times they are a changin” and with good men in place the change will surely be for the better. God bless Barberton!

      • G.O.P. on September 5, 2019 at 7:35 am

I can agree with you on Rocky and Heitic. They will get my votes. The mayoral race is a coin flip. Whoever gets the mayor job will only be there 4 years and we’ll have another wild race for the 2024 seat. This will only be a mayoral transition, very much like Genet was.

just heard Kmart closing December 19th. I know their business was low, but still created jobs, and now we will have to go to Fairlawn, or Wadsworth to find any decent stores. ( for clothes and shoes …etc) Barberton is going to be a Ghost Town. I sure hope our “new mayor” works hard at finding something to move in that spot. ..before the Other Stores pack up and Leave too, and it will look like the Empty Norton Plaza. (I heard a rumor that DG may be thinking of leaving, did anyone else hear that one)? and no, we don’t Need anymore used Car Lots, Cash Stores, or Tobacco shops. What would You like to see Move in Kmart’s spot? Let’s be Helpful and Post some Suggestions.

    • Iconoclast on September 1, 2019 at 4:11 am

Well, one nice thing is that Barberton Police will be able to lay off half the force with K-Mart going. I heard Walmart was not interested in coming to Barberton because of the large volume of shoplifting! On the positive side I have been informed that Big Lots has expressed an interest in moving to the larger K-Mart part of the Plaza, but that would just leave another empty storefront in the shopping center where Big Lots is now. In the case of Norton Plaza, that shopping center has been taken down by the never ending destruction on Cleveland Massillon Road. Many businesses have suffered and some have died from that fiasco that seemingly will never end.

Because everywhere we went to get away from someone smoking, more and more kept lighting up! This was very inconsiderate, seen as how most could see my wife is on oxygen! I guess there were so many doing it, that it couldn’t possibly be enforced. But what a show though! Looking forward to the parade tomorrow! I Won’t complain about people smoking in public, just thought rules and courtesy still meant something!

NO SMOKING AT LAKE ANNA! IT’S THE LAW! Imagine many people lighting up and burning one at the Fireworks! Shocking! Anarchy! Imagine how much money could have been gleaned for the city if the police just came across the street from the station and rounded them up and collected all those fines for the city coffers. NO SWIMMING, BIKE RIDING, ICE SKATING, FISHING (and taking a bluegill home), AND ESPECIALLY NO FEEDING THE GEESE. Lake Anna = Lake Restriction. I wish more people would take a stand and violate all these stupid rules and take back our lake. Just for the heck of it I am going to buy a loaf of bread and go throw it in Lake Anna to feed the geese all the while thumbing my nose at city hall!!!

And I’m glad I had that cigarette after the fireworks to clear out some of that sulphur nitrate! You know it could probably could have killed me! Not to mention the environment! So Triska, you think outside people are going to judge Barberton by the viewline ? Really ? How about being judged about some of the people who live in Barberton. The drug problem and a very high crime rate for such a small town. There is a lot of hardworking good hearted people in this town and it is an embarrassment to hear what outside people say about Barberton. This use to be a proud blue collar town where everybody had a job at one of the local factories and money to spend. Barberton is just a shell of its formal self and it’s a real shame. And you want to blame the Viewline ? WOW ! ! Let’s shutdown the Viewline because you don’t like what is being said. GREAT ! Yes, there are a lot of stupid things said on line, insulting and rude. “I don’t like it either” it’s a lot of people’s frustrations with their every day lives and crazy things going on in the world today. But guess what, it’s our Constitutional first amendment right.

      • Triska on September 1, 2019 at 1:31 am

well if the Herald wants a tabloid …blast the world page, maybe they can keep it separate like on FB or Twitter. and No, I didn’t mean they will judge the Town solely by the Viewsline, but many people do subscribe to the online instead of the paper version, and they are reading this, as well as the Police logs and all, they see the crime. yes…. we do have many problems. so do many Other cities. but this IS a Newspaper. the Digital version, not a local “sound-off bulletin board” but the Herald can create one just for Frustrated people, sure, but a Newspaper should have Dignity, if not for the Town, for Themselves. I mean are you Proud of when they post a Tragic story and someone has to post an idiotic comment and hurt the Family’s feelings? Free Speech is fine, but what is going on Here is a bunch of Name calling, and Baby Babbling , and no one is really “discussing much of anything” Important…or Helpful, like posting ideas and suggestions for our City Council.

The Green Hornet (Steve Brookens) does seem to be running a campaign without signs. I do wonder though if large signs showing candidates in a family setting or big billboards mean much when it comes to getting the job done. It was nice to see the Herald do a great article on the Hornet in this weeks paper. He will address the flooding, stop useless expenditures such as the purple mobile bus, and get our police (the best money can buy!!!) new cruisers. To me that trumps a bunch of signs. Best of all, he will cut the high pay received by big shots at City Hall and make them work to earn a decent but not outlandish salary. I voted absentee this primary and am proud to say I cast my vote for the GREEN HORNET. Hope you will all do the same.

Let’s discuss Rocky’s Drive-thru and Gas Station. For purchase: milk, water, eggs, bread, jam, peanut butter, chips, soda, candy, gum, ice cream, and other miscellaneous every day food items. For those of age, like every other convenience store, beer, cigarettes, energy drinks, and all the “other” types of items set forth below by “Lydia.” All of which, like milk, water, and eggs, is legal to sell in Ohio. Let’s also talk about Rocky’s and how the business and its owner has contributed to the community: (1) stuff the bus (2) mittens, hats, hot chocolate for kids in the a.m. who forget their winter items or whose parents can’t afford proper clothing (3) permits kids to wait in the store and keep warm in the winter months before the schools open (4) power is out and your losing food items or are concerned your food will spoil? Check out Rocky’s and he will let you store your food in his coolers (5) stays open during flooding so you can ensure you have enough gas to get around town and also for any other needs you may have (6) paid for the Norton police officer’s badges to be dipped/colored in pink for breast cancer awareness month (7) supports all local sports teams (8) local park is overgrown with trash and debris, he cleans it up. The list goes on and on and on and on. Just thought it was important to throw that out there just to make sure we keep things “fair and balanced.”

what you are failing to realize is that this person running for Council has 2 faces so so to speak. I think some of his Good Deeds are overblown but I do feel he has done some credible things. Some of the other things that have been mentioned are true as well. So as a voter you have to decide if you are comfortable with a person that is obviously promoting two different lifestyles. Just my two cents as an unbiased voter. my only question would be if a person is doing good deeds for the right reasons should they constantly look for a pat on the back and public praise? Self promotion of such good deeds seems to be a theme with Rocky’s

I was recently given a run down of some of the items I could purchase at Rocky’s gas station. Along with gas and food, cigarettes and booze, you can get marijuana drug tests, 7 hour High Voltage Detox, and if that doesn’t help, you can just purchase “clean urine”….. I didn’t find that item on the shelf, but the rest of the items were pictured together in a post by Rockys Gas Shaun, with this as the remark: “Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and for those who celebrated 2 holidays don’t worry. I GOT YOUR BACK!!! Plenty of supplies if needed. Wishing everyone an awesome start to your week.” #muchlove

    • Cheech & Chong on August 23, 2019 at 4:26 am

Aw c’mon. Are any of these items illegal? Your thinking is archaic. No one cares anything about pot anymore. It is legal throughout the country and mostly legal here in old fashioned Ohio. Get a life! In the seventies we could get papers, pipes, etc. at any drive thru. Just because a guy sells such products does not make him a druggie any more than every bar owner who sells whiskey is an alcoholic. Rocky has stated that he will donate his entire council pay to the youth of Barberton area. That does not sound like a pusher to me. Wonder if any other office seekers in Barberton will follow suit? Someone wise once said, “A tree is known by it’s fruit.” Rocky’s fruit looks pretty good to me!!! Given the number of his signs out here I’d say he will prevail in the election.

      • Lydia on August 23, 2019 at 9:14 am

Well, since I didn’t even state what I was thinking, just what I was told. I am not sure how my thinking is archaic….But since you asked, this is what I think— He will still be getting an income from the City of Barberton which he will have to pay taxes on. But by donating that amount to the youth he will be able to get a higher tax credit then the amount of taxes he paid. Which sounds like tax evasion or tax avoidance.

        • Loopy-holes on August 23, 2019 at 2:21 pm

  79. Barberton Strong on August 16, 2019 at 8:26 am

So here is a question for the herald. I love our town’s little news paper but why would you actually favor or give the appearance of favoring one candidate over the other? You put the mayor on the front page but Carla gets page 10? This is a serious election with serious issues. Out city needs help to get out of this financial rut. Why not treat the candidates the same?

    • check this out on August 16, 2019 at 10:37 am

she favor billy they want to high school together

    • Iconoclast on August 17, 2019 at 4:46 am

It is also notable that the third candidate for Mayor, Steve Brookens (a.k.a. the GREEN HORNET) has not been given an article at all. He did receive press in the much larger Akron Beacon Journal but the Herald seems to be ignoring the man. In fairness, a couple weeks remain before the election and there still may be plans to feature him, but if they do not I’d say it betrays favoritism.

      • not a peep on August 17, 2019 at 6:20 am

I’d like to hear what his plans would be. Should have already put himself out there on the internet. Youtube video would be great.Personally I will never trust the media again. Straight to the source is the only way till it too is fully censored.

      • Editor on August 21, 2019 at 12:06 pm

We tried to contact him the same time we contacted the other mayoral candidates. He did not return our calls. Once we did get in touch with him, he canceled the meeting. We are still trying.

thats a joke your all for the mayor . we can see that

          • Barberton Strong on August 24, 2019 at 4:29 pm

You’re likely correct ‘check this out’. It’s no coincidence the Herald employee who “runs” the Viewsline is an ardent supporter of the current mayor and never fails to let everyone know about it, consistently going after others who disagree.

        • Iconoclast on August 30, 2019 at 5:50 am

Thank you to the Herald for publishing the fine article on Steve (Green Hornet) Brookens in the Aug. 29 issue.

    • Frankie Facts on August 18, 2019 at 7:49 pm

Current mayor will always get the bulk of the press. The other 2 candidates should have wrote the Herald and asked that their campaign agenda’s and or ideas be published for all to review. Do they have credible and printable plan’s for the voter’s to consider? I would ask this question first. Mitchell who ran for mayor a few years back said he was afraid to share his idea’s because they could have be stolen by his democrat counterpart. No need for cloak and dagger secrecy in local politics. Brooken’s heart is pure purple but he also see’s a big purple paycheck. Walk before you run Mr. Brooken’s. Show up for council meetings and educate yourself. Run for a council seat next term. Carla had a modest run on council and she is to be commended for her effort. However there are some short comings that have been alleged. Educated voter’s can take it from here.

Judge at best has managed to keep bailing water from a sinking city but has no idea how to fix the hole. That is not the guy we need. His opposition has no credentials what so ever. Either way it is a sad state of political affairs here in the Tragic City. I would suggest that smart voter’s and homeowners focus on sending a STRONG message to a verified failing school district that is asking for more hard earned taxpayer dollars. VOTE NO ON ALL SCHOOL LEVIES. Come see us when the Sate of Ohio has verified that your performance is on the rise.

      • DO WHAT??? on August 19, 2019 at 4:12 am

So let me get this straight…If we follow your advice we will have no Mayor and the schools will have no operating funds??? That’s an improvement??? Why vote at all? Sorry, but your line of thought ends nowhere.

        • Frankie Facts on August 19, 2019 at 5:44 am

Our local politics and school district embodies your statement of “ends nowhere”. So in a left handed sort of way you are starting to understand.. Welcome aboard friend ! Truth be told, either candidate running against Judge could do not worse than him, he has set a pretty low bar. Your school district is failing, money will not fix that. Hard work from within the teaching infrastructure will. Ask Wadsworth residents how many school levies they have had in the past 15 years. We have had one every 3-4 yrs. Which of those 2 districts would you want your kids to attend ? I voted for several school fund requests previously but we cannot keep rewarding mediocrity. You like comedy ? If so try using Barberton city schools as a selling point when you go to sell your home.

      • check this out on August 19, 2019 at 4:14 am

Mitchell also said GOOD OLD BOYS and that surely is the truth. Time for change. Carla need to have some power to get things done not her hands tide. This Mayor has done this to her way to long i seen it day in and day out.

        • Frankie Facts on August 19, 2019 at 5:54 am

The “good ole boys” is a myth fueled by those unsuccessful in political en devours. The closest thing you have to’ good ole boys” would be your over paid and under worked local municipal workers. Most of them don’t even live around here so what are they controlling or influencing ? The mayor has a couple of close cronies one of which is well known but who is to say Brooken’s or Debevec would not promote a friend of sorts themselves? We need ideas and plans, not finger waving.

          • check this out on August 19, 2019 at 9:02 am

Here I thought that triple bankruptcy and non-residency were prerequisite to being a successful planning director! Won’t go belly up on a lucrative 80K plus job with great benefits. A failed director for a failing town.

  80. Barberton Strong on August 15, 2019 at 4:34 pm

What does we have leveraged our water and sewer assets to create economic opportunities and customer growth? I don’t know what that means and Judge uses it as a campaign accomplishment. But it doesn’t say anything and it doesn’t mean anything. If you’ve done anything then say it enough with the flower language that sounds good but means nothing. This has got to change. Re-paving 80 lane miles may sound good but it has made zero impact on travelling through this town.

  81. Barberton Strong on August 15, 2019 at 4:23 pm

I think its important to point out that the mayor really has nothing to say of what he has done the last four years. This fluff and illusion he attempts to create regarding Amazon at Rolling Acres is laughable. He says he is working to ensure we have an opportunity for employment with Amazon via his hard work is absurd. This guy had nothing to do with the City of Akron procuring Amazon to this spot. Bus lines already regularly run from Barberton to Rolling Acres. When he is confronted with this now he changes it to more direct lines to Amazon from Barberton. He says he can’t provide any other info because he doesn’t know what the shifts will be. What a bunch of garbage. You going to use that big purple bus to shuttle everyone all day, everyday? This is his poor attempt to use fluff so he can keep his job. Akron’s accomplishment should not be used as this guy’s accomplishment for Barberton. Maybe put more time and effort into keeping the police department cars in good working order?

        • how can these people run? on August 16, 2019 at 9:27 am

          No revenue = problems.
Does not matter who you give the overpriced salary to. Nothing will change until businesses appear in this town. And businesses are slowly struggling, closing or moving to down size. Get ready for the bottom to drop out real soon. Remember 2008? It will be worse in about 15 months. Layoffs, unemployment, house market, stocks, you name it. Just wait, it’s coming.

  82. Lydia on August 13, 2019 at 9:15 am

Is buying the election illegal or immoral? With such an important election ahead for the residence of Barberton, I agree that we all need to get out to vote, and we all need to help our neighbors that might not have a way to get to the polling locations. Absentee voting is a great tool that can provide better access to more voters. However, helping a person get registered to vote and paying them for the vote you want is considered Ballot Tampering. Paying for the stamp for the absentee voting ballot is still “buying” the vote, which is both illegal and immoral.

    • Disappointed on August 14, 2019 at 5:26 am

        • Surf and Turf on August 14, 2019 at 6:39 am

Yes! Football will always trump any other sport on the turf. Generates more money for the school’s. But what is going to happen when the school’s are going to have to pay for the rest of the turf loan? Not even close to paying off the loan as of now and in ten years will have to make repairs and replace. But then again, no one is allowed to use it anyways so it might last for 15-20 years. Your tax money that goes to the school’s will pay for the turf. Good Luck Barberton.

Is it right, NO! Did they kill people . . . YES!!! What in the world is the City of Barberton coming to??? He wants to “shame” children on the street who are learning and growing when he, a very grown man, sold debilitating drugs to Barberton residents. And, let’s not forget that he is located across the street from two schools!!! He wants to act like he’s this big town supporter now when in fact, he’s part of the repercussions of selling bath salts and paraphernalia. He was also a businessman in town and has done much charitable work for the youth in the area. I wonder if the Board will guarantee that should the thing pass we will not hear about a school levy till 2029??? Also, isn’t it something that the Superintendent will not be voting for the levy? He and most of the highest paid school system employees do not choose to live here and pay their property taxes in other towns. Go figure. We’re good enough to pay the very high salaries and beautiful benefit packages for these workers but not good enough to live among. Kinda a slap in the face to us “Barbertuckians”!

Barberton school district rates out in the bottom 30% of the state per the report card system, they have a lot of nerve asking for more cash. LEVY DOLLARS GO TO THEIR POCKETS. State money is not allowed to be used for salary increases, etc. Educate yourself as a voter. VOTE NO ON ANY NEW LEVIES.

    • Iconoclast152 on July 30, 2019 at 6:43 am

I don’t know if I’d give alot of thought to whom the firemen endorse. The fact is we have several Republicans running this time. Two of these men, “Rocky” Jabar and “Bebe” Heitic are actually businessmen who might know a thing or two about spending money in a conservative manner. If elected, together with Steve “Hornet” Brookens this could be a dream team and very good for the city. Our current Mayor and Council seem Hell bent on spending money on a Justice Center we do not need and mobile homes. They have given a high city position paying over $80 thousand to a man who lives in Norton and pays his property taxes there (good enough to take our monies but not to live among us?). If we do not take advantage of these mens business experience the fault is our own. Make Barberton great again…lets shuffle the deck a bit and hopefully be pleased with good results.

Your comment is very much out of place! Rocky Jaber owns and operates a very busy convenience store/drive thru/gas station. His efforts in the community caused him to serve as the Grand Marshall of this years Cherry Blossom Parade. As for Bebe Heitic, he is a skilled chef whose restaurant has captured so many “Best of the Best” awards he could use the certificates for wall paper. I doubt you’d have a clue as to how to do their jobs. Such hubris…condemning and making light of a mans line of work. Perhaps you are a skilled brain surgeon or a professor? From your literary style I’d say its more likely that you are on relief! Furthermore, you offer no evidence to support your allegations that these men are drunk drivers and whoremongers. Shame on you. The Herald should delete your ridiculous remarks.

I heard someone say today that they were voting for Carla Debevec, because she can fire Joe Stefan and Lisa McLean. Unfortunately, both of those individuals were appointed by and work for a commission, and are not employees of the Mayor. It does not matter who the Mayor is, they can not fire people that are not even their employees.

If Mrs. Debevec is such a great option for Mayor, why did she sneaky pete the election. When asked by many people over the first part of the year, she stated no she was not running for Mayor this year, then two hours before the deadline, she drops her name in the race, I do not understand why lie about something like that. It is hard for me to get behind someone that lies right to my face.

I would think making such a decision to run and subject yourself and family to the level of petty you just demonstrated must be a hard decision to make and one that is not done lightly. Maybe she didn’t make up her mind until it was time to file? Maybe she didn’t want people such as you taking such an issue with her run. My household is looking for a change. If there was ever a town that needs to be financially taken over by the state, Barberton is it ! They do it with poorly run school districts, why not a town? All is not lost. We are already making a fortune with the great Norton sewer merger and now we are looking at expanding fire dept coverage with a dept that has excessive OT expense due to call off’s and vac time. Your leaders need to get a clue, the only merger that makes FINANCIAL sense would be to merge the 2 school districts. Just keep signing those subcontractor checks Mr Mayor

While walking through the city parking lot behind the library, I saw something minor, but annoying. Everybody is supposed to empty anything that holds water to prevent mosquitoes, right? Well, there are parking signs for city employees that are on poles that are in buckets with asphalt to hold them up. Problem: the asphalt is about six inches from the tops of the buckets. There are no drain holes for the rainwater to run out of, meaning, you have at least a dozen moquito factories right behind the library! Can some employee find a spare hour or two to drill holes in those buckets?

Billy promised to get with engineers years ago to fix the flooding, never happened. Numerous biz’s have left without a trace or a fight. Another candidate allegedly has issues paying their personal bills. Hornet is viewed as a joke. Oddly enough, my gut tells me he cares more about the town than the others. ABJ did a nice piece on the Hornet today. Find the former republican clown candidate from a few years ago and you would have a comedy reality show. Welcome to Barberton mayoral 2019. Lord save us !!

    • Iconoclast152 on July 3, 2019 at 4:24 am

You are correct. Choosing Judge or Debevec is asking for more of the same. This is the age of political outsiders stepping in and getting the job done. Just look at what President Trump has been able to accomplish in two short years. The Akron Beacon Journal seems to see this and made Steve Brookens (A.K.A. The GREEN HORNET) their main story on the front page on Tuesday, July 2. Here is a man who had a career as a professional wrestler and a businessman. He can get going when the going gets tough and fears no opponent. I think he would dredge the canals and solve the flooding problems. Heck, he couldn’t do worse than what we got going now, could he? Frankly, I believe this mans candidacy deserves more looking into by the Herald and that the good citizens of the Magic City should give him a try in the Mayor’s Office.

      • Purple Gong Show on July 3, 2019 at 5:36 pm

Brooken’s seems like a nice gent but lets keep things real, he has no credentials or game plan to be mayor. It’s a nice local human interest piece, that is where it ends. Takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there and because of that I would encourage him to run for a city council seat. I would vote for him. The real key to keeping this town off life support lies within city council. Council has a lot of power to do things but you have a bunch of reps that want to “emergency” and vote “yea” on everything so they can get home quickly to watch “the bachelorette”.
Your mayoral candidates are poor and I am being nice. WE NEED “REAL” EVERYDAY PEOPLE ON COUNCIL WHO STILL BELIEVE IN THIS TOWN. Not rep’s looking to cash in $1000/ month for 3 hours worth of work.
        Have a happy and safe 4th !

I had to Laugh when I just saw that fox news story about Kimble trash getting caught dumping both recycle and trash in the same trucks…in Barberton! My husband just said last week, “hmm they must being doing it different now, maybe they have different sides to the trucks one for recycle and one for trash, because they just picked up both” and I told my husband he must of been imagining……. lol… sigh ..now I am going to have to tell him he was Right! only it wasn’t because the trucks have different sides. … the workers changed their story 3 times to the reporter who followed them and video’ed them. ..the Company is saying maybe the worker was not properly Trained… hmmmm… or maybe… it was to save Time on the route??? I saw they sent out those notices… “if in doubt throw it out”… because they were getting allot of non recyclable stuff in the bright bins…. thought maybe they were cutting back on the recycle program. I am more confused than ever ..what to put in which can these days. I heard some companies where even Fining residents for putting non recyclables in the bright cans. so I been doing Less sorting these days. heck with it….. seems some workers might be thinking the same.

If you want to have it made with a salary four times higher than the average Barbertonian the work as a teacher or administrator in the schools here, or in the Fire Department, or even better, at City Hall!!! Raises galore and more!!! Are we not a bit crazy being that these highly over-paid folks work on our money? IF EVER WE NEED THE GREEN HORNET IN THE MAYOR’S OFFICE, IT IS NOW!!! He would get this stuff fixed.

All of that drama over someone allegedly buying tobacco for a minor ? Very poor decision making by all involved.
So when do we start placing multiple people at risk over low level misdemeanors ? Better training is needed for Barberton’s finest.
